Childbirth

too much amniotic fluid

ive been diagnosed with g diabetes 2nd pregnancy and i have too much amniotic fluid. I had this with my 1st as well and when my waters broke it was such a gush. I was lucky to be on a hosp bed at the time. im worried that when my waters break again there is a risk that the umbilical cord could pop out. This is really dangerous to the baby as it cuts off the oxygen supply. I just wondered if anyone else had a lot of fluid and was worried like me.

How far along are you? IS the baby's head engaged yet? If so, no worries about cord prolapse as there's nowhere for the cord to go! I had polyhydramnios diagnosed at 32 weeks and all was fine. If there is a risk of cord prolapse you will be induced so they can monitor the baby and do something if there is a problem. It's very worrying for you but fairly common.

Let me know X

im just over 33 weeks. The head is down but not engaged yet. they did say that they would induce me at 38 wks but im worried about if my waters break before then. I went into hosp at the weekend with contractions every 3 mins thankfully they managed to stop them. I keep getting braxton hicks mostly in the evenings but not as bad as they were or as regular. i will try not to worry but im a born worrier and am already cacking myself about giving birth again. thanks for your message singalonga.

Jeanini, the obstetrician said to me that, if my waters broke, it would be "spectacular" and I should get to hospital ASAP. She recommended 999 for an ambulance if DH were out at work.

DD's head was engaged by this point so she said that I just should get to hospital asap for DD to be monitored. We didn't talk about prolapse as it couldn't happen to me. I read on the internet (and will try to find the link for you) that if your cord does prolapse (or if your waters break and you are worried that it might), what you are supposed to do apparently is call 999 and then open front door and stick your bottom in the air and head down in the hall so that the pressure is off the cord whilst you wait. The paramedics can get in and sort you out without you endangering the cord. I am not sure I am remembering correctly and I would certainly ask MW what to do if I were in your shoes but I think that there is time for you to get to hosp even if there is a prolapse.

I agree that this is a worry (I worry for Britain myself Grin) but if you have a plan you can get to 38 weeks (or a safe birth before then) and be fine. Take care and let me know how it's going.

I had a prolapsed cord(Thank God I was at the hospital)
When they say head down, ass up they mean it,you get down there as far as you can and then you get further,ok.
The odds of it happening are relatively small so another vote of please try not to worry.I had another 2 babies after and worried myself sick so I know kind of where you're coming from.

I had too much fluid with my third and as I had a home-birth planned the midwife sent me to see the consultant. They made little sense as they said they wanted me to have a hospital birth yet were not going to take me in to break my waters to ensure nothing went wrong - I was worried as my waters tend to go 1st. As it turned out my waters did go 1st with no problem even though head was not engaged. Didn't get the home birth though as no cover Angry. Had to go to Hospital got there with 10mins to spare, out in 3hrs. I think it is normal to worry as it is something you have no control over.

doolaly- when your waters break was it at home? did it ruin whatever you were sitting on? when my waters broke so much came out all at once, im thinking i wont be so lucky next time and be at the hosp when they go. my contractions came straight away and painfull. But as no 2 births are the same it could be different this time. Im really trying not to worry but i always think worse case scenario then anything else is a bonus!
