Elective Caesarean

Hello, I'm currently in my last year at school and hoping to start a Midwifery degree in September. I am in the middle of completing a Project Qualification on the topic 'Should women have the right to an elective caesarean?' It would be ever so helpful if I could get some points of view on this, do you agree/disagree? And also if you have time to answer some of the questions on my survey... www.surveymonkey.com/s/HNJYK7R
It would be a massive help if you could spare some of your time to do this, many thanks!

Well, I'll start by making one great big enormous criticism.

Obviously, women who haven't yet given birth are not worthy of an opinion.

You might want to start by doing some research on the reasons why women want to choose to an have ELCS... and how and why the NICE guidelines were updated on CS in 2011.

If you would like me to point you in the direction of some interesting research I'll be happy to do so, but I do think your omission of not including women who have not yet had a child points you having a severely lacking background knowledge and is a fundamentally huge flaw to what you are trying to do.

Giver her a break - she's only in her last year at school. At least she is thinking about the issues!

Tough.

She needs to realise that women who haven't had children also have views and also may have valid reasons for requesting a CS.

A lot of women, particularly first time mothers, are worried about having their feelings dismissed because they haven't yet given birth and feel they won't be listened to.

She the sooner she learns this, then frankly the better. Its a very very basis idea.

basic*

GrownupGoth · 27/01/2013 22:34

Harsh. I'm sure you could have been a bit kinder with your opinions. The questions don't suit me as a mother of three either, but constructive criticism would be much more worthwhile.

Survey done.

Good luck on your project, and welcome to Mumsnet. Don't let the bastards get you down.

Done

LurcioLovesFrankie · 27/01/2013 22:55

Done.

Your questions weren't perhaps that well thought out, but designing this sort of survey is extremely difficult - were you given any help on methodology by your tutor?

Absoluty yes women should have the right to choose, its our bodys!

Women are not just a pair of birthing hips and a womb - we also come with a brain attached.

I always like to put my two pence in because I had a so called text book birth first time round - it was 6 hours established - and 23 mins pushing , one small un stiched tear. I was told I had excellent child bearing pelvis.

It was emotionally and mentally too much for me,and indeed even physically, my back hurt for a good three years ( it turned out 5 years later i was told she was back to back!!!!), and other things that have only now started to feel normal again!

i knew myself and that I struggled so much emotionally during a so called straightfroward labour - there was no way I could cope if things did go wrong, and things do go wrong all the time!

I had a section the second time, and it was not pleasant, not an easy option by any means - but compared to labour - it was a dream for me. And absoluty the right choice for me. And no one else on this earth - can make that call, except me.

Some women just prefer the thought if a CS as opposed to a VB. It doesn't really have to be more complicated than that. Both mine were ELCS maternal request - perfect choice for me but probably not for others.
