Group B Strep

I have an unfortunate bacteria present in my birth canal that will never be eradicated called Group B Strep. According to my consultant, it was the cause of the premature rupture of my waters at 21 weeks and the resultant loss of my first baby - a little boy weighing 15 oz. During my second pregnancy, I had to take 75mg asprin daily and for the first five days of every calendar month up until the baby was born, antibiotics to control the bacteria. Then during labour - I was induced as my consultant did not want me to go over my due date for fear of anything happening - I was given huge doses of antiobiotics to protect the baby as it was coming down the birth canal. Once my daughter was born, she had to be given intravenous antibiotics for the first five days of her life. I am pregnant again (third time in 2 1/2 years), and unfortunately have to go through the same routine again. Does anyone else have tol go through the same during pregnancy and labour?

Have you done a search - we have talked about StrepB and GBS a lot...

RaW, really sorry this happened to you, and especially that your first baby died.

Do search as Pupuce said, you will find others, I was found to be carrying StrepB but not until after I had given birth. i was furious and upset that my newborn DS was put on IV anti-biotics (it's truly horrible, isn't it?) but after reading other experiences on the StrepB tthread, and hearing about people like you who lost babies, i realise that i was actually lucky.

Good luck with your pg, and do look at the GBS support and information website.

RaW, there are quite a few of us on Mumsnet who carry Group Strep B (in fact I will always be grateful to it for one thing, it helped me find Mumsnet.

I am truely sorry for you loss, although I cannot fully appreciate how you feel. I am fortunate to have two healthy children, I did not find out the implications of carrying Strep B until my second pregnancy (although it was discovered during my first labour) and spent many months worrying.

First labour I had antibiotics through a drip and second time things were so fast it was an injection straight into the vein, too close to delivery IMO.

All the best during your pregnancy, I certainly spent much of my second pregnancy giving various health professionals print-outs from the GBSS website, I was shocked how little they seemed to know.
