Anyone had a reasonably fast labour after a history of slow labours?

I am pregnant with DC3.

DD1 I had constant and painful contractions throughout a 24 hour latent phase followed by 14 hours active labour and two hours pushing

DD2 I had constant and painful contractions throughout a 16 hour latent phase following by 9.5 hours active labour but luckily only a few pushes

I hope beyond hope that my third labour might be quick and not involve a protracted latent phase.

Anyone got any heart warming stories or if you are a long labourer do you stay that way?

First labour - latent about 12-14 hours, active about 10 hours, pushing 2 hours

Second labour, latent 4 hours, active 2 hours, pushing - a few minutes.

Third labour, latent phase was a few days to be honest but manageable period like pains and I think I completely missed the active stage as I only went to hospital because my husband was concerned that the contractions were not getting stronger or closer together. Then bam I had a massive contraction within minutes ofvarriving at hospital and she was born a few minutes later. If I hadn't listened to hubby she would have definitely been born at home.

So although I think the latent phase was longer with dc3 the birth was definitely the quickest and easiest.

Thanks for replying Tickle. Your experience is encouraging.

I wonder whether the lack of other replies indicates that there aren't many positive stories other there?

First labour started after a sweep on a Thursday morning, latent until Friday midday ish, had her Saturday at 6pm was awful! She was back to back.

DD2 also back to back did hypnobirthing. Waters broke 10pm, 5 minutes apart by 6am so went in but pretty painless. Got sent home at 9am as was too chatty to be in proper labor Hmm had a lovely tranced out hour in bed, delivered head on pavement at 11.40 the rest in the unit at 11.44!

Very fast very pain free throughout so have hope and don't go to sleep thinking all is ok

Donkeyswife · 11/01/2013 10:27

My first was 26 hours, the 2nd was 50 minutes (although apparently I'd been in labour for a few hours according to the obstetrician and really hadn't realised).

Good luck!

Donkeyswife · 11/01/2013 10:28

And aside from being super duper fast (so fast my hubby missed the birth), it was complication free too unlike the first. A few extremely painful contractions and out she popped.

daisydoodoo · 11/01/2013 10:43

i had 3 sections and then a fast delivery.

1st section was failed indutction and never got past 6cm, other two were or breech, the number 4 was 3 weeks before due date, woke with back pain, went to get some parcetomol from the kitchen and delivered baby on kitchen floor with my 12 yr old son present!

barleysugar · 11/01/2013 10:47

I am a long labourer. I had hoped dc3 would be faster, like you, but alas no! Number one was about 48 hours, number 2 10 and number three was 10 as well, more or less. However, I do believe that number would have been much quicker as it was the first time my waters broke spontaneously and when I got to hospital they thought I was ready to deliver. What happened was that we found out baby had turned back to back and that was why my labour slowed down and became drawn out. The second stage was much longer too, because of this.

Havent read all replies but my first 3 labours were

7 hours with 1 hour pushing but that was an induction

13 hours latent followed by 10 hours active but only 5 mins pushing

withh dd1 i was niggling for ages and then spent 24 hours in latent phase then another 10 in actuve labour again 5 mins pushing

dd2 was born last week labour was 3 hours start to finish and i don't think i ever intentionally pushed, she just popped out much to the surprise of all involved! Think i might still b in shock as it was a very intense experience

hth

My first labour lasted 28 hours (12 hours active) second labour lasted only 6 hours, the hospital kept telling me to stay at home because my first labour was long, in the end we ignored them & went anyway, got to the hospital & dd2 was born half an hour later.

LadyHel · 11/01/2013 11:44

Hello there, my two labours were totally different.

DS1 labour was 47 hours in total from my waters breaking until he was born. I think I was about 28 hours latent / 17 hours active / 2 hours pushing. He was in an awkward position though. He wasn't totally back to back but tbh by the time they realised that he was in an odd position I was past caring and didn't listen to what they were saying!! I had an epidural and oxytocin drip in the end. All very intense as the epidural didn't work. Ouch.

DS2 was born in 2 hours 20 min. We didn't even manage to leave the house as we stupidly thought we'd have loads of time once my first niggles started. DH had to call an ambulance in the end as I wouldn't budge off the bed! My waters broke and he was born 6 min later, after 2 contractions. The ambulance arrived in time but the emergency midwives wandered in 10 minutes later, wittering that they had got stuck in traffic on the one way system and they couldn't believe I didn't hold on for them... which was helpful.

Both were intense in very different ways and although it was good to have a swift birth the second time I was definitely in shock afterwards for a couple of days.

Best of luck to you & your family.

Taffeta · 11/01/2013 11:46

First 26 hours
Second 1hr 10mins

Had second within 4 mins of arriving at hospital, standing up, just got my pants off in time.....

Taffeta · 11/01/2013 11:49

yy to shock after a fast delivery. I have never reflected on anything in my life, have a firm future focus, but it took me 6 months to stop thinking about the birth. It was absolutely fine, no complications at all, I just couldn't get it out of my head!

BigBoobiedBertha · 11/01/2013 11:50

From waters breaking to birth it was 30 hours for DS1 including 14 hours of active labour and 4 hours of pushing.

DS2 I woke up vaguely uncomfortable at 7.30am. Had a bath and decided it couldn't be labour as it wasn't any better for being in water and anyway, no real peaks and troughs in the pain. By 11am- ish thought it might be contractions but wasn't sure - not very regular. Phoned hospital who said to come in as I might have had a urine infection (it was that sort of constant ache) no urgency though. Before we got organised (trying to get child care for DS1), my waters broke 12pm and DS2 was born at 12.19, delivered by an ambulance crew at home. Probably an hour of active labour but I'm not sure. It hurt but no more than being at about 3 or 4cm with DS1 so I was expecting worse. Even avoided hospital which was a major bonus.

I couldn't believe it went from 30 hours to less than 5 hours.

tumbletumble · 11/01/2013 13:47

DC1 - 27 hours from the first contraction, 20 hours of active labour (I think this is defined as from 5cm dilated). No complications, just a long labour.

DC2 and DC3 both 3.5 hours from the first contraction.

Restrainedrabbit · 11/01/2013 14:14

Mine went like this - from first contraction :)

Dc1 27 hours including 50 mins pushing
Dc2 2.5hrs with 5 mins pushing
Dc3 1.5hrs with no pushing :)

Softlysoftly · 11/01/2013 15:55

taffeta snap! 4 minutes from door to baby, including getting my pants off. Midwife pointed out afterwards I very stylishly still had my sunglasses on Grin

MrsBungleBear · 11/01/2013 15:58

First labour - 52 hours - 1.5 hours pushing.

Second labour - 1 hour 54 minutes - 5 minutes pushing.

BackforGood · 11/01/2013 16:04

dc1 - 27hours
dc2 - felt a bit 'restless' for about 4 or 5 hours, woke up to go to the toilet, and found her head peeping out.... I delivered up on the ward... no time to get me to the delivery suite. Grin That might, of course, be quicker than you were aiming for Wink
dc3 - I woke at about 3.30 am, she was born just before 6am.
