Advice/opinions on refusing induction and asking for a c-section.

I am 40+5 and I have high blood pressure/protein in my urine I was very close to being induced last friday because of my BP/urine but a blood test came back at the last moment which was ok so they let me continue with my pregnancy.

I have had 2 attempted sweeps but both times my cervix was not open at all :(

My baby is big, predicted to be 4.5 kg/10 pounds, my dr has said they don't like to induce women with large babies.

I really really hope that I go into labour naturally before my bp issues get too dangerous or I get to the 21st (the day they intend to start inductions.) But if I don't and they want to induce me my feelings at the moment is that a c-section would be safer for my baby. I have a cousin with SN due to getting stuck and starved of oxygen at birth, I am much more concerned about the health of the baby than I am about my own health.

I have a realistic idea of what it would be like to recover from a c-section (as much as a first time mum can I guess) my mum gave birth via c-section when I was 18 and her DP didn't live with us so I took care of my mum and the baby, things like I took my d-sis on her 1st outing in the pram and I carried her for the 1st couple of months in a sling and helped my mum up and down stairs with the baby, ideally I wouldn't want to have such a long/hard recovery and miss out on specail things at the start of my baby's life but it feels like a small price to pay for a safer birth. My DP is very supportive and he has 4 weeks off work after the baby is born so he will be around to help me.

I have a growth scan on tuesday and if the baby is near 5kg they will do a c-section that day.

Has anyone had experience of declining an induction and requesting a c-section? Also has anyone been induced with a 9+pound baby?

Thank you for reading :)

I was induced with all five of mine for going more than two weeks overdue.

My babies were

8lb 7oz

9lb 3oz

9lb 5oz

10lb 13oz

All boys and then dd waa a teeny 8lb.

My inductions went fine, the easiest was actually ds4 my biggest baby, broke my waters, just under an hr of labour and he waa born in birth pool :)

you are not in ths uk? So not sure what the 'rules' are re c section. In the uk women can request them.

Would you consider neing induced but setting a time limit ie if it doesnt progress smoothly then straight to c section?

Also scans are not always that accurate; i was scanned and told i was having small babies... Then as ds4 was so big they scanned wirh dd and thought she was going to be 9lb+ but obviously she wasnt.

Whatever yoi decide i hope it all goes smoothly for you :)

My induction failed. I had a sweep at 39 weeks, when I was 1cm dilated. They started to induce me at 40 weeks with 3 lots of prostaglandin gel over 24 hours. No progress made. OB expressed concern about baby being big (he said 8lbs) and me being small (5'3"). Offered to rupture my membranes but I refused. I decided to go straight for c-section. Said yes at 8pm and DS arrived at 9:22pm, weighing 10lbs 11oz.

Yes, it was uncomfortable for a couple of days but good pain meds helped.

thank you for the advice :) 5 your dd must have felt like a dolly after your bogger babies! It is good to hear your induction experiences. Part of the thing that worries me is that I know size scans can be out especially this close to the birth and what if the baby is 5.5 kg! Another thing I should consider is how many babies I would like (I'd love 4 but DP isn't happy about that idea yet)

I'm not in the UK I am in Sweden, I didin't think you could just choose a c-section it was my DP who said to the Dr that if I had been in the UK I would have opted for a c-section over an induction and the Dr said I had the same choice in Sweden it was a case of if they could find a solution to my fears they wouldn't give me a c-section, so if I was worried about the pain of birth they would say we will give you pain medication the entire way through. They don't let you choose a c-section just because you want to scedual the day or because you have a preference over that sort of birth for no reason.

I am a simalar height to you merry, partly that is what worries me as my DP isn't very tall either and the baby's legs are measuring normal. I think if I was expecting a long baby I wouldn't be so worried but I think our baby is wide/chunky rather than long. Were the medical staff ok with you refusing to have your waters broken?

If you want more than 3 babies you'd be better off trying for a vaginal delivery as C sections can become more difficult and risky each time.

I have had two fairly big babies 9lb 5 and 10lb 6oz

I wasn't induced but had two EMCS.

From what I gathered (I had 8 growth scans with my 2nd) the medical profession aren't concerned about how big the baby is as its the position of the baby more than the size that can determine the labour/birth.

Honey, i am 5 2 and generally a size 10/12 size four feet. Despitw my babies being big i birthed them fine. its mainly position not size that affects thw birth.

My easiest birth was 10lb 13oz ds4. My hardest was dd as she was back to back.

That gives me hope 5 :)

I am doing everything I can to get the baby moving, pinapple and lots of walking today, I even tried galloping like a horse last night, not very dignified ;)

I will ask them about the position at the scan on tuesday, I wonder if they can tell from a scan.

I was induced, two sweeps which did nothing, and two lots of the gel hormone thing. The hospital said they would try with the hormone three times then go onto the drip.

Luckily it worked. But I did say that I wanted z c section rather than drip and they said that was fine

Yes, the medical staff were absolutely fine with my decision. Mind you, I am in Canada.
