Cord ties

There are couple of very old threads on this but wondered if anyone has more recent experience. I'm due in 3 weeks and suddenly remembered the big clunky clips, like freezer bag sealers, that get put on their cords. I've heard of cotton ties as an alternative which sound much nicer but not sure if this is medically acceptable at the moment in UK?
I will ask mw when I see her next week but wondered if anyone had used one. On line I've seen things about using plaited embroidery thread...

I asked about this with DS less than 2 years ago and was told categorically its a no no. Shame, as I think it'd be much nicer :(

Oh thanks for replying! I thought that might be the response but surely noone can like the freezer clips. Probably there is a clinical reason behind it though..

I think it's just because they're sterile, but then, as long as you boil a tie, it would also be sterile ... but even suggesting that, I was told no.

Is it because they're easy to be sure they are tight enough? Fiddly cotton ties might led to blood loss?

Could be! Just so annoying they have to have something so uncomfortable/ugly looking!

Much more secure and the ligature is hard to tie tight enough - we had a lady recently who elected to ligature the cord and the baby unfortunately bled enough to need a transfusion.

Going to ask my midwife on Thursday, but in the meantime I did some googling, asked a question, and a lovely lady responded to me here and is going to make me a couple for £3 or so.

Laluna thank you for clarifying. Sounds like one of those unlikely to happen, but better safe than sorry things.

I used a cord tie, but with an independent midwife. What she actually did was to use the plastic clamp but on a longer length of cord than usual when cutting the cord, and then used the cord tie closer to the baby, and cut the plastic clamp off a while later.

I heard you could use dental floss, but I have no idea whether it's true, or even possible!
