Anyone heard of a homebirth after an ECS?

I am so scared of hospitals - had an awful time with ds - did not want to go to hospital and was coping fine at home then dh stupidly phoned the midwives on duty and they insisted we get to the hospital and it all went pear shaped from then on.

So, can I ask for a VBAC at home? Would a doula be a good idea. I have ages to worry about this as not due till the Autumn.
TIA

Hmmm. I was wondering why the OP asked about 'homebirth after an ECS' rather than just after a CS.

MeggLeVache · 09/04/2006 23:08

Bubble I thought ECS stood for Emergency (I was later corrected by Pupuce)- my mistake - it was not an elective. I go into a bit more detail in my -10:27:05 PM- post.

Great news about your pregnancy BTW. Smile

I'm going to hire an independent Midwife - we 've decided- I'm going to try to stay at home for as long as is possible.

bubble99 - VBAC could be more risky after an emergency c/s rather than an elective. It depends on what type of cut you had during the c/s. Horizontal cuts are more common during elective sections, whereas vertical cuts sometimes happen in emergency c/s's. These are more likely to rupture during pg/labour. I think you'd know about it from your notes if you'd had a vertical section. This only means the cut in your uterus - you could have a vertical cut in your skin, but still a horizontal cut in your uterus - it depends on the presentation of the baby and the urgency of the section. Hope that all makes sense!

bubble99 · 11/04/2006 20:58

That's interesting. Thanks for that, Laura. I have a horizontal scar to the skin but I hadn't realised that the lower layer incision may have been vertical. I'll definitely have a look at the op notes.

MeggLeVache · 11/04/2006 21:00

I don't know either about the uterine scar.

Hi Bubble....
Wondered if I could CAT you....

The AIMS website www.aims.org.uk has some excellent information about vaginal birth after CS. It is aimed at giving women informed choice.

Many doctors and midwives give information that is medicalised. It does not give an accurate and fair definition of risk.. eg. 'you are putting your life and your baby's life in danger by having a VBAC at home because your uterus could rupture. A ruptured uterus after a LSCS is about 1:7000.

Everybody has a different perception of risk and surely it is the women's on decision to make choices about her care.
