Which E London Hospital - Quick Straw Poll

Can I have quick straw poll (and enecdotes) on which E. London hospitals are considered good or bad?
I've been offered Royal London (Whitechapel), Newham General or Homerton.
Royal London is my closest - I could have antenatals in the GP surgery... However, a bit worried about that one (not sure why) - and thinking of Newham because it is not so 'inner city' (and been in there before).
Delivered Dd1 in Brighton - loved that - but seem to hear nothing but horror stories about London hospitals - and becoming worried.

Thank you!

Haven't been to any of them myself, but have heard good things about Homerton.

I had my ds at the Homerton in 2002 - had a lovely midwife to deliver and a good birth, aftercare a bit hit and miss but I was low maintenance, so don't know what it is like really. Going back for my second later in the year!

aftercare at homerton is awful ie there isn't any. My sister had an emergency c-section and she was in such a state, the only reason she managed was thanks to a kindly mum in the next bed.....

I went to King Geroges (a bit further afield than your options), but it was fab, and the aftercare was wonderful.....

Homerton better than Royal London

i would recommend to go to the whittington, i know it's north but it's not too hard to get to from thereand they were brilliant with me

Don't know if it is at all relevant to you, but I had v. good midwife care for both my homebirths in E. London area (Royal London is my closest hospital). At least 2 midwives present and attending during the births.

Hope I am not too far off track, although I didn't deliver in London (live in Essex), Dd had an inguinal hernia (groin) at only 3 weeks old and had to have an operation at Royal London. Care was great and we were all home again 4 days later, safe and sound. Dd is now a strapping 14 month old intent on destruction!
I know it's not the same but I was still mega post natal at 3 weeks and everyone was very nice to me!
Good luck with your big decision and especially with the birth. xxxxxxxxe

I've just had my second child at the Homerton and can't fault it, though you do have more idea of what's what second time round! Much better than my experience at St Mary's Paddington. I'd advise asking for a private room so you can get a bit of peace off the main wards - I paid £70 for an 'amenity room', which means you share a bathroom on the ward. You can get one with its own bathroom I believe, but it's first-come-first-served. Definitely worth it though.

I had my 6month old at the Homerton, had planned a homebirth but no midwives available to come out to me etc etc.

My labour, delivery and post care were all excellent. BUT, my son was delivered by forceps and I suffered a 4th degree tear as a result and now have a colostomy bag. I am taking legal action against the Homerton.

I know of 2 other ladies who are taking legal action against the Homerton who had babies there in the last 6 months: one had broken her pelvis in two places and was readmitted twice as a result before they spotted it. The other was prescribed 'safe' antibiotics for a womb infection (which was misdiagnosed, she didn't need antibiotics at all) i.e safe for breastfeeding...they weren't. Her daughter lost 20% of her bodyweight in just over 24 hours and spent 3 weeks in SCBU, and nearly died.

So, erm, I wouldn't go for the Homerton to be honest!

We were living in E14 when I was pregnant with dd, all of my pre-natal care was at Tommys, can you not get in there (they were excellent btw)?

Flossam · 08/04/2006 20:59

I went to st thomas' too, but I was given special dispensation because I was an employee. They are quite strict about outlying mum's now, as all and sundry wanted to go there as the facilities are great! Grin

Otherwise I had a similar choice to you. I'd go for the royal London, to my mind, it has a better reputation generally than the other two. Smile
