Tips for a good birthing partner

My best friend is 38wks today and I am going to be her birthing partner. This is her third child and she knows what she is doing (in terms of giving birth and asking me to be her birthing partner!).

She is hoping for a normal hospital delivery, with as little intervention as possible. She has had a hell of a life and very little support from a useless xp during the last two labours. She hasn't requested specifically that I do anything other than be there for her.

So...I want to do a good job. Have any of you had birthing partners that weren't your dp/dh? What did they do right? What did they do wrong? I am aware that each birth is different as is each mother, but some suggestions of what you found helpful would be very gratefully received.

TIA

make sure you've talked through with her and know exactly what she wants... that way you can speak for her if necessary and make sure she gets the birth she wants.
