Anyone had a 2nd induction? Was it better or worse than the first?

That's it really! I have no real choice but to be induced next wednesday (@ 39 weeks) and tbh I'm working myself into a bit of a panic about being induced again as last time was so intense.
Several friends have said second babies are quicker but more painful and none of them have been induced which is making the anticipation even worse.

i had an induction with my second baby (although the first was spontaneous) but have to say it was a better experience, quicker, easier, less painful too I think, no stitches.
Good luck

hoxtonchick · 30/03/2006 16:21

yes. the 2nd one was much better: quicker, & i pushed dd out myself in 10 minutes whereas ds was a ventouse/forceps delivery. she was a pound lighter though!

Mosschops30 · 30/03/2006 16:23

yes the pushing was better for me too, ds was out in 3 minutes (although my friend kindly said it was because I had a large floof Grin )

pepperrabbit · 30/03/2006 16:26

Well that makes me feel a bit better! I had nearly 4 hours of pushing last time and was beginning to think i might demand an epidural before they could get the pessary in this time.

i had epidurals with both, & the 2nd was much better too. lighter, so i knew when the contractions were but they didn't hurt. i'm sure that's part of the reason the pushing was better.

Shock at 4 hours pushing!

pepperrabbit · 30/03/2006 16:41

That was just before the hour in theatre to remove the placenta... (when I had the lovely epidural Smile)
Thanks Hoxtonchick - I guess part of it was the induction was at 41 weeks last time and I can't help feeling DS just wasn't ready to come out, hence the slowness. So this time at 39 weeks it could be even worse. Also it's because of gestational diabetes that they want to induce me - and I'm much lighter this time (don't know if the baby is of course, but hey!)

I was just like you - had a crap time with my first induction and was dreading a second - so much so that at 36 weeks I began to beg for a CS! Consultant said no, and I was induced a second time and, like Mosschops, it was a comparative breeze. It was a lot quicker. And a lot more painful but only for about 20 minutes. Think that's fairly common with 2nd births anyway and had nothing to do with induction.

Yorkiegirl · 30/03/2006 16:45

I had 2 inductions. 2nd one was a breeze, still painful but so much easier than the first.

pepperrabbit · 30/03/2006 16:55

thank you sooo much, ( I was even wondering what they do if you fail to turn up for your induction Blush)
I feel so much better now - and I will have a baby by this time next week!

try not to worry about it. I was scared of how much it would hurt. With DD1 I had every pain relief going, but with DD2 I managed with gas and air and TENS. It was so much quicker and easier.

Only one child and he was induced and I also pushed for 4 hours with a previous ten hours of excruciating contractions. This gives me hope as I was so dreading the next!

pepperrabbit · 31/03/2006 10:06

I'll let you know how it goes Smile

I was the same as you pepperrabbit, I was induced for ds2 and hated it so much that refused an induction for dd, so I can really sympathise. However they wanted to induce me because I was overdue, not because of any problems like your gestational diabetes.

It's great to hear such positive stories and I'm glad you feel better. Just think, next week at this time you're going have your wee baby in your arms Smile

spacecadet · 31/03/2006 10:22

i was induced with 3 of mine and the second time because i knew that it can be more intense, i asked for an epidural early on.
with my 3rd induction, it was all over and done with in 1.5 hours start to finish!, so although it was very intense, it was quick so there was no time for pain relief, but the birth was lovely and i didnt have a single stitchSmile

coppertop · 31/03/2006 10:29

I was induced 3 times. The first time was a long labour but the pain relief was great. The second time was much quicker and easier, thanks to an epidural. The 3rd time was very painful but only because my MW was more interested in her paperwork than monitoring my progress and providing the pain relief I'd asked for. The pushing stage lasted less than 5 minutes and I was able to get up and about as soon as the MWs would allow me to.

Good luck. :)

pepperrabbit, i was induced with ds1 and ds 2. the 2nd time was a breeze compared to the first. they just broke my waters at 39weeks and i contracted straight away. baby born 2.1/2 hours later, just used entinox. the midwife commented how straightforward the whole birth was and that she wished they were all like that!! you do hear a lot that the second time is always easier than the first, and i must admit that i was anticipating a repeat of my first birth like you, but it was completely different. just don't go on to have a third..they are often the tricky ones..but thats another story!!!

sorry to post twice, my computer has a mind of its own..Grin

pepperrabbit · 09/04/2006 14:41

OK. went in on Wed, had 3 miserable days of prodding/poking intermittent contractions and watching other people come in, have babies and take them home again. And it didn't work!
They sent me home for a "rest" ie, it's the weekend and they don't have the staff to try again till monday.
Now, I'm so sore already I can barely sit down, and I have to go through it all again tomorrow... Sad
Apparently if this is unsuccessful I'll have to have a C/Section even though my sugars are fine and the baby is happy and doesn't seem to be huge (main risks with gest diabetes) just cos they've decided I need a medical induction.
Thanks to everyone for their advice - I was just re-reading this to cheer me up and thought it would be rude not to give an update!

Oh dear pepperrabit that's awful. I hope it works for you this week. Keep us updated.

Thanks to everyone for their advice - I finally delivered Freddie on Tuesday morning after two more doses of the Prostin.
It kicked off ferociously just after I sent DH home cos nothing was happening! Certainly more painful than last time as was much quicker but my midwife was truly excellent and I had no stitches this time either!
Off to post a Birth Announcement (how exciting!) while I'm awake enough to type....
He was actually born a mere 24 hours before his due date after all that.
