Hypnobirthing and SPD

Hi all,

I am 27 weeks and have just been signed off work with SPD. I have really quite limited mobility; I'm seeing a physio and a chiropractor and I'm trying to stay active while also not overdoing things and aggravating the condition.

I'd really hoped to give Hypnobirthing a go, but I am currently reading Marie Mongon's book and I am starting to worry about how compatible hypnobirthing may be with SPD. Some of the exercises/positions the book recommends (leaping frog, etc.) go against what my physio has said about opening my legs wide. Hypnobirthing also seems quite resistant to accepting pregnancy related conditions, and I am wondering if SPD comes under this heading.

Has anyone got any experience of the two together, and if so, did the Hypnobirthing work?

Thanks!

Hello, I have no experience of SPD, but did read marie mongon's book. I didn't do any of the positions as I was so huge and knew from the first time around what I wanted to do. I also suffer from a really stiff back. I purely used the book for the breathing and relaxation techniques which I found worked brilliantly. Whilst being in the process of giving birth (or labour as most folk call it) I stood up and leant against the bed rocking my hips and only got down (on my back, slightly reclined, leaning towards one side) as my baby was actually coming out. I dont' know much about SPD apart from it is very painful (poor you:( ) so not sure how mobile you will be, but mentally with the breathing/relaxation I found it a breeze and DS took 1.5hrs from first conscious tightening to out - no drugs, no repair work, all very nice. (I was also induced, which took 2 days and had a high dose of sintosin drip to the baby out fast, and the book really helped cope with the drip/induction)

I hope you get the advice you need from someone who knows more about SPD. I would say the book is very good for mental preparation. It might be worth contacting a Hypnobirhting practitioner?? Although I know they can be costly. Good luck with it all

Im doing the two together. Look at natal hynotherarpy rather than the mongon one. Its got much better reviews and there is no reference to any weirdo leapfrogging!?

I have no idea why you could do the two. Hypno creates a state of mind and unless you have to sit doing the splits to do it- the two things are separate.

I had awful SPD and did the mongon method in mind but not body - e.g. i couldn't possibly have gone near any of the positions suggested for perennial massage (which i seem to remember the book saying is 'crucial' for hypnobirthing). I couldn't do it, so i didn't and still had a good hypnobirthing experience - i.e. very calm labouring with only the odd spritz of gas and air -and i'm not normally calm or good with pain (though i suppose SPD forced me to man up on that front!) at all, so definitely proof it doesn't have to be to the letter to work.

Good luck with the SPD, mine had me beside myself with miserable, house-binding pain, but absolutely perfect as if nothing ever happened post-birth!

Thanks so much for the input - glad to know it is actually possible! Also good to hear that I am not alone with the SPD - it's taken quite a sudden turn for the worse in the past week so it's all a bit of a shock. I hadn't even heard of it before!

Will definitely look at the natal hypotherapy too. Thanks all! :)

That's fab - thank you. I have just been to an aqua natal yoga class and it was really helpful - although I ached quite a bit afterwards! I am definitely hoping for a water birth, too. Fingers crossed!
