Anyone used a doula?

I'm 29 weeks pregnant with DC2. Due to various things it's looking increasingly likely that I'll be giving birth alone.

I've looked at Doula UK after someone told me they have an access fund that can pay the fees if you meet the criteria. I do meet the criteria so have started to contact doulas in my area to see if they have availability.

But I also wanted to know how other people found having a doula. I imagine it's very different to having a partner/friend/family member with you? xx

hi there - I used one with DS a few years ago...actually I think it's better than partner/friend/family - although I know that is entirely subjective.
The main thing is to find someone you are really at ease with and on the same wavelength - I had an amazing Aussie who I have stayed in touch with even three years later. It was brilliant and reassuring to have her and to have someone totally there for you but also with experience of a lot of different births. And she helped out a lot in the weeks after too - well as much as I could afford at least.
At the same time my friend had a doula who was entirely different to mine - much older, very old school, possibly even a bit bossy? BUt it suited my friend really well - that was what she was comfortable with. So it really depends on what kind of person you are and who will keep you calm, focussed, reassured during the labour and birth. Hope you find someone soon.

I loved my doula!

She was alongside DH, not instead of. So I can't specifically comment, on that aspect. But they spend time with you pre-natally and honestly, I felt very comfortable with her. She was amazing. Like DH, but knowledgeable Wink. DD2 is 15 months and I am still incredibly grateful to her for what she did for us.

I think if you are likely to be giving birth alone it is a fabulous idea. Certainly if I couldn't have DH, I would rather have just a doula than anyone else.
