Anyone laboured in a plaster cast?

Hi I'm a newbie on here but have been reading some of the posts.
I am 40+3 with my first and thought it was a good idea to go for a walk to try to get labour going. I fell over and fractured my left foot!!!
I now have a plaster cast on from my toes to my knee. I was planning on an active / water birth but that's now out of the window!

Has anyone broken any bones close to their due date? If so how was your labour? Am worried I will have to have loads of intervention now as I won't be able to move around and get into different positions. I can bend my knees but they are very sore and grazed after taking the brunt of the fall. Thankfully my stomach wasn't affected and all is ok with the baby.

Any advise or reassurance would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Oh rubbish for you hun. I feel for you. I fell down the stairs a week ago and thought I'd broken my foot so I understand how worried you are. I have no experience but could your birth partner help you get into different birth positions? Try arnicare on your knees, thats what helped my foot when I did it. Glad all is ok with the baby x

No experience of this, but there might be positions you can use with birthing ball, or yoga positions that you could still get into without too much pain?

Poor you! Sorry I don't have any experience with this either but wanted to post sympathy as that must feel like the last thing you need! I won't be showing DH this thread as he is already paranoid I am going to fall over or otherwise injure myself! The above post re using a birthing ball to take the weight off your foot and knees sounds like a good suggestion. Hopefully someone will be along soon with some more ideas.

Thanks for the replies :)
At the moment I can't even use a birthing ball as I can't put any weight on my foot at all so can't steady myself on it. However I've got an appointment at the fracture clinic tomorrow and I'm really hoping they can put a different cast on so that I can at least put a bit of weight on my foot to steady myself.
Am now 40+5 and still no sign of baby although that's maybe not a bad thing if the baby waits till after my appointment tomorrow!!!
Have invested in a Tens machine hoping that will take the edge off the time at home as I won't be able to have a warm bath etc.
I am aching sooooo badly from hopping with a zimmer frame and climbing the the stairs on my knees! On a positive note though I should have nicely toned arms and shoulders by the time it has healed!!!

Good luck for the appointment. Love your positive attitude! Wish I had nicely toned arms and shoulders at the moment...

Poor you! - no experience of this myself, but you can get water proof covers for casts from a company called ' LIMBO' - they have a web site and I believe deliver with in 24 hours - so may or may not be in time for you. I have never used them myself but patients at work tell me they are very good. I don't think you can use them for much more than 20 minutes at a time but a least you might be able to get in the bath at home.
If you get to fracture clinic you could try begging them for an aircast boot which you can take on and off - I don't know what sort of fracture you have - but its got to be worth a try - then you could get in the birthing pool.

I can sympathise as I fell and fractured my wrist and had to have pins in 7 weeks before my due date, the cast came off the night before ds was born but I found the pins very uncomfortable and would have prefered to have kept the plaster on as I was able to put more weight on the arm with cast on. Can you ask for crutches ? They changed my heavy plaster after two weeks to a lighter one but I hope that they change yours sooner. I just found a way to work around it, but with an arm it is easier than a leg. Would a birthing ball work if you put it up against a wall for support ? Good luck .

Hi all,
Just to let you know I now have a little boy. He was born on Saturday weighing 7lb 9oz :)
My heavy plaster was replaced with a lighter removable cast which was much better but I didn't get my water birth.
I ended up being induced at 40+12 and eventually went in to 'active' labour on 40+16 via the drip. He was born the same day with the help of ventouse.
Just goes to show you can't always have your birth of choice but he's so worth it :)

Congratulations to you :)

Induction with drip usually = no waterbirth in any case. Birth fades so amazingly - it won't matter a jot how he arrived in a few weeks/ months...

Enjoy your little newborn.
