Why on OBEM are the ladies in labour always in bed???

I've been watching OBEM (21 weeks pregnant with DC2, not sure why i'm torturing myself lol) and almost all the women seem to spend their labour in bed and end up pushing lay on their back! WHY????

I know labour is different for everyone and i also know OBEM only gives a small snapshot of labour but every bit of information i've ever been given about being in labour and birth has advocated staying active and moving around and not giving birth on your back. With DS1 i was induced and was confined to the bed on my back and it was awful, I'm just really suprised that the midwives in OBEM never seem to suggest that the ladies get out of bed and move about a bit, especiallly when labour is stalling.

Not a massively important thread, but was just checking the "rules" for labour hadn't changed Grin

Both mine I was sitting on a birthing ball for most of the labour, with DD2 she was B2B initially so the MWs told me to stay upright, I had no intention of doing anything else, I had ended up on my back with DD1 (very long second stage) and hated it in comparison to being upright. DD2 was delivered on my knees, no pushing required the contractions were so effective.

I'll adopt whatever position I damn well like in my labour. I resent the suggestion that lying on your back is ignorant. Lots of people I've spoken to said they moved around and changed posiitons loads but when it came to the baby actually coming out, on their back was the only thing they could do.

I want to be as active as possible but I banged my arm slipping on the stairs this morning and my legs went wobbly, so I strongly suspect standing won't be a realistic option for me!

LO was back to back - by the last hour there was no way I would've got on my hands and knees, the pressure on my thigh was so strong, that anything other than lying down made them feel like they were going to shatter.

I gave birth in that hospital with ds2 and had an entirely active birth, I was in for 12 hours and I lay down twice during the whole thing for VEs and that was that. Delivered on all fours in the pool which was actually slightly awkward for the midwife as I turned around to look at him and she had to move me over the cord as I wasn't really sure where he was or how to deal with it!

I had an epidural with ds1 and was encouraged to lean up against the head of the bed in a squatting position but in the end, they asked me to go on my back to push to see what was happening as he was back to back and kept heading back up the birth canal/failing to progress down.

I'd suspect that a lot of women just naturally end up on their back, especially if they've had the epidural and it doesn't make good telly to focus on the midwife's interactions with them around positioning etc unless there's some sort of emergency they can put to music!

I gave birth in the Leeds hospital on OBEM and I couldn't get on to the bed (arrived 10cm dilated and in A LOT of pain), so the lovely midwives brought me mats and bean bags so I was as comfortable as possible and could give birth on the floor squatting. I found that the default position is 'let's get you onto the bed', maybe as I was at pushing stage? But when I didn't want to, they were lovely and very encouraging with helpful positions.
I wonder though, if I might have avoided a third-degree tear if I was on my back so things wouldn't be as 'quick'?

I was standing up/walking around until 8cm, then had an epidural so was on my back. To be honest, after all that walking I was exhausted, and then found out I had to push Shock With DS2 (due 2nd Oct) I shall take the first part of labour much more easy in order to have more energy for pushing!
