anyone had natural birth after having a Caesarian approx 18months prior?

I was hoping for a natural birth the first time round but due to the fact that I wasn't dilating, even after induction, and I was a week and half over due I ended up having a caesar, it turned out that, according to my Gynie, the umbilical chord was wrapped around my sons neck twice hence the reason he wasn't engaging.

I would like to go for a natural birth the second time round 18/19 months later, however, My gynie has told me that it is recommended to have an elective caesar as I had a Caesarian 18 months prior, to avoid the existing wound from possibly tearing during strong contractions.

Has anyone heard or experienced this? Is this a wise move or should I question it further? As I really would like to wait until the little one is ready to come out/ go natural.... At the end of the day, I want to do what's best for my baby and/or in this case me....

Plus my gynie has recommended an elective caesar 10 days before my due date for the same reason, that the contractions may rip my previous wound, this seems early to me or am I being paranoid/over concerned?

All opinions and constructive criticism welcome.

Thank you in advance for your advice/comments Smile

P.S. I would also like to add that my gynie wasn't completely against me going natural but did say that he would insist on using forceps, which to me, is definitely not an option...

I had a vbac 20 months after a cs. I went into labour naturally on my due date.

I can only advise that you seek a range of professional opinions on this and read up on the subject as much as you can. Your discussions with your gynie and other pros will be more constructive if you arm yourself with information beforehand. You could start with a search on here or google for vbac (vaginal birth after caesarean) which should lead you to some helpful resources.

Good luck.

Not personally, but one of my close friends has 12 months between her DS's - first was CS for failure to progress, wanted to try VBAC but consultant discouraged her. She went into natural labour at 36 weeks, and had her gorgeous son with only gas and air, and no issues with her scar!

I had an EMCS with my DD. she will be 14 months old when this next one is due. I haven't completely decided yet but after speaking to various consultants and midwives none of them think there will be a problem with the scar if I wanted to have a VBAC.

I have a client who had 2 babies within 12 months! The first cs for slow progress, the second a speedy vbac.

nothing you have said tallies with my current situation!

I had a DS by cat 1 EMCS nov 10. Due DC2 sept 12, will be 22 months after CS. Have been offered choice of ELCS or VBAC. ELCS would only be done at 39 weeks, better for the lungs if done then rather than earlier. Risk of scar rupture is i believe very low, around 0.5% i think they said. Read the greentop guidelines on the RCOG website, its got loads of info re births after CS, weighing up VBAC vs ELCS. My consultant has said that if this baby is back to back like DS was, they think another CS would be best. However if baby is in a good position, then they think i stand a good chance at VBAC, but they will only let me push for 30-60minutes max, if not delivered by then, then would be taken for an EMCS as the longer you push the more likely the scar will rupture. Slightly different to you, in that i went into labour with DS spontaneously, and after a while with a cervical lip, i did fully dialate, and got to the pushing stage, but after circa 4 hours, he got very distressed.

You do not have to have forceps, indeed my birth plan says that i do not want forceps under any circumstances. I think they are barbaric, they can cause damage to the baby never mind the state the mother can be left in. Having heard so many horrors of women suffering incontinence, prolapses etc there is no way i want them, i would much rather have another EMCS than forceps. Think i am open minded about ventouse for now.

Thanks all, sounds positive about the VBAC, Loopy, Forceps are definitely not an option for me either... I have a meeting with my gynie next week so will sit down and discuss in detail as not comfortable with ELCS so early.... Will have to see :)

My BF had a vbac today after having a emcs 17 months ago. All fine. They did use forceps, however they needed to get him out quick.

I've had a emcs, before we tried forceps and personally I found it much much better than the ventouse which frankly was fucking horrid. But I did it on gas and air, that was tough. Saying that everyone is very different and we never know how the birth will pan out on the day. I was told, to wait 18 months before giving birth again.

I'm sure you can do a vbac.
Good luck.

Thanks, all, I spoke with my gynie today he is happy to go with VBAC but Caesar if necessary as I really don't think forceps are very safe for the baby. So am alot more satisfied now :)
