UTI taking ages to heal- any experiences?

Hi

Dd is 6wo. I have had a UTI for three weeks now, it's been really painful. I have been on antibiotics for two weeks and have today just started a new course of ABs, my third course and a different AB. Dr said I might need to stay on the ABs for a few weeks to clear it properly.

I also have a broken down perineum (second degree tear wasn't stitched) but that's healing well. It could be the cause of the UTI though.

Any experiences? Anyone else had a UTI that took ages to heal? How long did it take and what worked?

TIA

Poor you unboo, that sounds very uncomfortable.
I was very prone to UTIs as a teenager, and had an infection of my womb after DS1 and a prolapse after DS2-0ne might wonder why I am having a DC3!Grin

Just a couple of things-has a sample of your urine ben sent for culture? If so, it should come back with what is growing and what anti b is going to work.

If your perineum is broken down it could be causing discomfort and irritation which would give the feelings and symptoms of a UTI, but you wouldn't actually have a UTI IYKWIM? Maybe you need to see someone about getting the wound healed?

When I had infection in my womb it made me feel like I had a UTI, could it be this?

I thought I had an infection in womb/UTI, which turned out to be a prolapse.Has this been ruled out?

I have found that Robinsons Barley Water-diluting juice, comes as orange or lemon-acts as a great diuretic for UTIs. Drink plenty, and try to hold on going to the toilet until you have a full bladder. UTIs often make you feel like you need to pee, but there is only a dribble, and it burns...
Wear lots of lose clothing, and don't be fobbed off,if it is not healing up get a different opinion.

thank you so much for your reply :)

i'm under consultant gynae care for the perineum because it's the second time this has happened to me so they are taking extra care...

4 samples have been sent, 1st showed nothing, 2nd showed a group b strep UTI, 3rd nothing and 4th has only just been sent off. the dr is working his way through the list of ABs that are supposed to work based on teh test results. BUT according to the last result i no longer have a UTI, so the last dose of ABs were given based on my description of the symptoms not on the test result (becase i do feel like i still have one).

its getting better but is still there.

which brings me to your point about the prolapse. what exactly is this? i've read bits here and there about this bt not fully sure. i do definitely feel as though the upper wall of my vagina is protruding out, it was like this for my pregnancy but has remained so. this possibility has not been investigated, so i'm intrigued that you had UTI type symptoms which turned out to be a prolapse.

many thanks for taking the time to reply :)

I had/have a rectocele prolapse, where the wall that separates the rectum from the vagina is weakened in pregnancy/childbirth. So the wall falls down into the vagina, falling or bulging outwards.
I had large babies-DS2 was 10lbs 11oz,which contributed to it.It did "go back in" over time. But was very uncomfortable at first.
An auxillary I used to work with thought she had a recurrent UTI, which turned out to be a vaginal prolapse. If the contents of your bowel-ie some faecal matter are getting into your bowel via the trauma you suffered at birth, it could cause this irritation also...
As I say keep drinking plenty, and maybe talk to a dietician about what you can eat to promote healing. Post birth eating can be hit and miss, and a high protein diet can really speed up healing.

Sorry, that should say the contents of your bowel-ie some faecal matter are getting in to your urethra...

Should also say that I am not a doctor, but was a nurse on surgical ward for years.....just advice that I followed myself IYKWIM.

Ask about lichen sclerosis too, if you have a burning sensation

umboo · 01/08/2012 14:20

i dont have a burning sensation, its more cramps when i need to wee, and feeling lilke i need to wee but not much coming out. today and yesterday has been better which has been a relief.

how is a prolapse assessed? one consultant who assessed my tear about 2 weeks postnatally did assess my back passage by inserting a finger and i had to clench around it, she said it seemed as though there was no damage there becase i did that ok.

oh, and ive stopped doing pelvic floors because they've been painful. though i just checked and it wasnt painful just now.

things seem to be easing up but im worried about whether the problem has not been diagnosed fully. i did definitely have a UTI but am worried about whether theres something else at play as well...

many thanks

Hope things continue to improve, but I think you're right to press for an answer. Good luck!!
