Infected C-Section Scar, which antibiotics best of breast feeding?

Am gutted that I've got a second infection in my scar. The first one was oozing pus on the edge so was given dose of an antibiotic beginning with F, maybe Floxcillin or something. Anyway it cleared it up although DD was windier than usual.

Have just noticed another arein the middle that is oozing pus and is red all around it with a small soft lump underneath? Will get appt with GP tomorrow. Will they give me the same drug again or something stronger? Is there one more suited to breast feeding that won't give DD extra wind as its bad enough anyway?

It's really getting me down that I've hot another infection, my recovery this time is souch harder than before!

Thanks in advance, Pie x

The breastfeeding network have lots of downloadable medication leaflets. Also you can ring their drugs and breastfeeding helpline. Haven't got the number to hand but would be easy to google. Hope that helps

Hi Piemistress the antibiotic you had was prob flucloxacillin. I had a course of that for an infected c-section scar. Might be worth looking if you've got a bit of undisolved stitch in the area. One end of mine was going manky and I pulled the stitch out puss came out after it then it cleared up by itself. Then the other end did the same and was lumpy like you describe. Couldn't find a stitch there antibiotics cleared it up. Good idea to go to GP tomorrow. Hope you manage to get it sorted out.

Thank you! There is a hair coming out of the bit where the pus is, hard to get decent look for stitches though as belly gets on the way!

I found a useful list on the kellysmom website but will also check out the breastfeeding network.

Am 6 weeks past the op so thought would be over the worst of it by now, booo!

Hi, like you I had two infections, had a different antibiotic prescribed the second time which was fine with BF so there must be a few you can have. My scar is now a really feint line so hopefully once you get this cleared up you will heal fine. Hope it improves soon

Hi, I've had two c-sections and both times the wound was infected. The first time, it took weeks and weeks to heal. The second time I asked them to take a swab to check the antibiotics I was on would work. But I honestly feel the best thing the doctors did for me in the end was to put a dressing on it. I know they don't really like to as they say it is better for the air to get to it but the trouble is that where the wound is it doesn't get much air to it! They put these fantastic waterproof dressings on it so I could still shower and I had to go back every couple of days to get it changed. It healed much quicker than the first time.
Also, you have probably been told this but try really hard not to twist at the waist as I've heard this can hinder healing.
Good luck at the doctors, I really hope it clears up quickly for you.

Oh sorry, regarding the breast feeding. I had three different types and none of them had any effect on my babies that I noticed. Think they were flucloxacilin (?) and amoxicillin and then a stronger dose of one of them.
Sorry, that is not very helpful!

Better hit the sack, DD will be up got a feed soon!

Piemistress, I really feel for you. I remember getting quite depressed that it was taking a while to heal.
It will get better! Just keep on at the doctors until they get you better. I was on the phone or down there daily the second time round - made a right nuisance of myself x

The HV is due round tomorrow morning, she is really lovely so bet I burst into tears! Must try and keep a lid on my emotions!!

Will be hitting redial at 830am tomorrow, last month though I couldn't get an appt so the duty doctor saw me.

The dressing they used were called mepilex. They really were brilliant.
Also, I found seeing the nurse was very helpful (in fact more use than some of the doctors!)
After the second course of antibiotics the wound was still open and I asked the nurse if I should get some more antibiotics but she encouraged me to keep going with the dressings and by the end of the week it had closed up.
Good luck tomorrow and don't keep a lid on your emotions - let it out! Coping with a newborn and an infected wound is really hard. X

Managed to get an appt with the nurse for 230pm today, phew. Fortunately DS who is 2.6yrs is at nursery today so can hopefully take it bit easier.

That's good news. Hope it goes well x

Glad you managed to get an appointment Pie, hope you get it sorted out. Mine got infected after six weeks too. I think it just comes as a test to show how tough and resilient us mums are. Don't worry if you get upset. I spent the first two months getting upset about everything! I think we don't realise how much a c-section takes it out of us as we are too busy concentrating on the end result of our dd or ds.

Let us know how you get on this aft and hope you get some good help.

Piemistress · 30/07/2012 11:46

The hv was round this morning and i didnt cry! I showed get the scar and she said its definitely infected and will need anti biotics. On the plus side DDhas put on 18oz in 2 weeks so that has cheered me up!
