Private maternity wings/hospitals that offer c sections?

On the balance of risk, I've decided that I'd rather have a c section than risk a VB that goes wrong and ends in physical trauma (the odds of which are high, I've done the research).
I can only seem to find three hospitals in the UK that offer private c sections though -
Portland
St Thomas's
Coombe Wing, Kingston.
Are there any others?

Well some of the other private wings are the Lindo Wing at St Mary's Paddington and the Kensington Wing at the Chelsea & Westminster. There are others too. Presumably consultants at all of the private mat wings/hospitals will give you a c section.

Have you had a bad experience previously, or are you a first time mum?

The private wing of Queen Charlotte's does ELCS. It is called the Sir Stanley Clayton wing.

SweetPea I'm a first timer. However horror stories from my family members and my GP friends have made up my mind...too much risk.

Coombe wing, Kingston may be private but all the maternity services are still carried out in the NHS part of the hospital including the operating theatres.

The private wing at Watford general

Octanegirl - I am a first timer too and like you I had worked myself into a real flap about the risks of a natural birth. It didn't matter how many times people told me "but it's totally natural - women have been doing it for thousands of years", the anxiety was just building and building. Then someone recommended a book called Spiritual Midwifery by Ina May Gaskin... it is really hippy (I couldn't believe I was reading it at the start ... they talk about it being a psychedelic experience!), but it has totally put me at ease. I'm actually looking forward to having a natural birth now (although, I am also lucky that I am going privately to the Lindo Wing and know that I will have the best care... I might not be quite as confident if I was going to a hospital that was really under-staffed).

Totally respect your decision if you want to have a cs, but if £12k - £20k is a bit steep to go private (mine covered by insurance), maybe you could think about reading the book and then getting an independent midwife or doula to accompany you at the birth at an NHS hospital. Just a thought x

Hi Sweetpea - i am going to have a csection at the lindo wing on friday (3 august) i'll be 39 weeks + 4 it has only just reopened (about 6/7 weeks ago). have you heard anything and when are you due?

OCTANEGIRL - i am having a c section because my baby is feet first. when are you due i will try to find time to come back on this thread and let you know how it was. i am under karl murphy and lorin lakasing. you need to find a consultant that delivers / operates at whichever hospital you prefer. there are no pools at the lindo, depiste the recent refurb. its all consultant led - this might reassure you. the one to one care from going private both for ante natal and during labour would undoubtedly give you the best chance of a vaginal delivery.

SweetPea3 · 27/07/2012 20:43

Hi LaughingLemons - I'm not due till end of October, but going to Lindo on Sunday to check it out. Have you had a tour since it reopened? I'm pretty excited! Gosh, you are so close! Good luck!

Octanegirl "On the balance of risk, I've decided that I'd rather have a c section than risk a VB that goes wrong and ends in physical trauma "

I've had both and the caesarean was MUCH better. Stick to what feels right for you and good luckSmile

Can recommend Lindo

Hey octanegirl. Your choice either way so won't comment on that.

Have to say I'm a little alarmed your GP friends have been giving you horror stories. Generally you might only hear the worst from people as the uneventful stories aren't quite as dramatic a tale but I think it's v unprofessional for your doc friends to have given this advice and as someone who works with doctors every day, I don't actually think you've been given a rounded view.

GL :)

Lansdell suite in st Thomas's is fabulous

kittybloom · 29/07/2012 08:55

Sir Stanley Clayton within Queen Charlottes is good. QC is a dedicated maternity hospital and most would say it is the leading maternity hospital in London. I have had 2 c-sec there.

My only advice would be to find a private wing within a large maternity hospital. That way if there are any difficulties you/baby can be treated quickly there.

im booked for a c section at the kensington wing in chelsea and westminster...the front staff isnt great but the conusltants are all lovely and most of the midwives apart from one (who made me cry last week) they are all lovely
im with keith duncan myself...spoke to some of his patients who said he gives amazing scars like a hairline...
he also said to me his patients hardly have any overhang ..he explained its how you stretch the skin when you do an incision ...
i can let you know after wednesday how it all was ..

I am at the landsdell suite at St Thomas' Hospital. I have been told I can have a VB or CS, but we are aiming for VB then will make final decision later nearer the time. However I am being treated as a high risk pregnancy due t previous history.
You could try calling them and asking for an appointment with a consultant there. I am being treated by Mr Eugene Oteng Ntim, and he is wonderful. really kind, and listens to you and your worries, rather than just dismissing them. As soon as I had my first appointment with him, it was like a huge weight had been lifted offf my shoulders. To be honest I was certain I did not want a VB (I woudl be induced too) when I was using the NHS, but now I am at the landsdell suite I have more confidence I will be looked after properly during an induction.
