Decoding notes??

Just stumbled a cross my delivery notes and noticed that under complications it says:

Tr. to CU. A/N; Prolonged second stage (7hrs), PROM.;

I understand the prolonged second stage bit. PROM I think is premature rupture of membranes - would this be because they broke my waters (I was induced)?

Can anyone help with what the first bit means? To give you a bit of context I was induced with ARM and oxytocin and had mid cavity forceps delivery with manual rotation (ouch!).

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Transfer to consultant unit

Transfer to consultant unit antenatally?

That would make sense.

That would make sense - I had been planning to deliver in the midwife-led unit until I needed to be induced. Thanks fisspaps.

Pre-labour rupture of membranes?
Prem is usually written as PPROM (preterm prelabour...)
I swear obstetrics has more acronyms than any other medical speciality Hmm

Prolonged rupture of membranes? - they like to get the baby out within 24 hours of the waters breaking as then the risk of infection goes up.

darkfever · 19/07/2012 17:55

PROM is premature rupture of membranes.

Premature in this case meaning before labour has started, rather than anything to do with baby's length of gestation.

Thanks all, that's really helpful.

cardamomginger yes, indeed. That's pretty much what the midwife who visited me at home after discharge said when she read it! Still, dd and I made it through ok

Well, we were all wrong. The P of PROM stands for pre-labour, not premature.

'Prelabour rupture of the membranes (PROM) at term'
