can I be induced after previous c.section?

I had a pretty bad experience with my c section and really really don't want another!
I have been told my baby will have to come early due to problems with me and previous stillborn, consultant has told me they don't induced after section (but I was induce for my stillborn baby with no problems)

I really just want a chance to avoid another section, I know they won't give me the drip as that is very strong and can cause problems with the old scar but I really want to try gel or suppositories (had suppository with stillborn and I only needed that to get going)

Just wanted to know if I can/should push for an induction or has anyone else been induced after c section?

I had a c-section for DS1 and then hoped for a VBAC with DS2. However he had other ideas and 2 weeks past due date there was no signs of him coming. The Drs did say I could be induced if I wanted to but went through the increased risk of the scar rupturing. I spoke to the consultant who had been fantastic with both pregnancies and asked her what she would do. She said that although it was my decision she would have a c-section. So this is what I did. I was so much better prepared for my 2nd c-section. Even though the first c-section was not an emergency I had really got my heart (naively) set on the 'perfect' delivery and struggled to cope with the idea that I had 'failed' by having a c-section. (which of course I hadn't but you know what hormones are like!) The 2nd and subsequently 3rd c-sections were absolutely fine and in many ways very positive experiences. I knew what to expect had everything packed and organised and felt confident.

So I hope that answers some of your questions

I was induced after c-section, with the drip but was constantly monitored and was told I was only allowed to try labour for a few hours (though I was not told about the possible extra complications due to first EMCS). The induction did work but there were signs that my scar was not holding and I ended up with another EMCS. I was told by the consultant that it was still holding when we got to theatre, but the midwives told me that it was a very close thing. I wouldn't risk it again but would go straight for ELCS.

This depends on a number of factors.

Some consultants will induce for a VBAC (including using the syntocin drip) some absolutely will not.
Even if the consultant would be willing to inducce they may feel that you are unsuitable for induction - again many factors, number of previous CS, length of time since last CS etc etc

After a crash CS with DD1 I had a Very sucessful VBAC with DD2. I went into labour with DD2 naturally but had my labour (which was slowing down) speeded up with a fairly aggressive syntocin drip.

The risk of rupture is mostly a risk to your child, which is why they were prepared to do it for your stillborn child.

I know people who have had induction after CS, and got away with it, but to my mind the increased risk of uterine rupture, and hence of brain damage to my baby was simply unacceptable and I said that I would not be induced under any circumstances.

So sorry for your loss, and very best wishes for a good birth.

Dolts but CS also carries a risk for Mother and baby. As does the whole process of childbirth. With my experience I was satisfied that continous monitoring was enough to mitigate the risk.

Op unfortunately risk exists whichever path we take. Only by understanding this and taking expert advice can we choose the correct path for our own circumstances. I too am sorry for your loss and hope you can find your way to a birth plan you can live with. Personally I had very low expectations for my second birth, I think this helped it to be the positive experience it was iyswim.

my consultant absolutely will not induce me with a previous c section. think it must vary on consultants and hospitals but I've just been told at my booking in appointment that if I want a VBAC then my body will have to go into labour by itself. all they can do to assist is a membrane sweep but I'm not to have any artificial hormones to induce me. If I dont go naturally into labour then I will have a planned section. I'm going to leave it up to mother nature. What will be will be. I ended up with a very traumatising emergency section on my first baby 2 years ago. Either a VBAC or ELCS is going to be a more positive experience that I'm sure xxx

Oh I didn't know that DilysPrice I've only had 1 section 5 years ago, it's not a case of feeling like a failure that I had to have section (baby was breech, head and feet up so I had no choice) but more because I just had such a terrible after, baby swallowing fluid and spent 3 days in special care, infection and blood clots was readmitted to hospital without my baby and hardly saw her for 2 weeks and struggled to move for weeks after that so I really missed out with the early bonding and couldn't breast feed because of this.

don't see my consultant till next week but wanted to know my options before talking to her, was thinking if I could book a section but go in the day before and have a go at labour, If I don't progress and would need stronger drugs (that I can't have) I could just go with the section?

You absolutely could do that - and with good monitoring the risks to your baby would be very low (still too high for me, but then I was indifferent about having a CS - you understandably feel differently). However you need to be realistic about your chances of VBAC vs EMCS - ask your consultant about how likely it is that you'd actually get a VBAC rather than a day's labour followed by a semi-emergency CS.
