Hi
My midwife has suggested using almond oil to help stretch the perinium during child birth, has anyone tried this and did it work please?

Thanks
Kelly

Am trying it at the moment as my midwife also suggested it! (well olive oil or KY Jelly but sure it does the same thing.) Will let you know in 3 weeks or so whether I end up with stitches...(first baby)

I tried this, and no - it didn't work! Believe me, there is no oil in the world that can stretch a perineum enough to get a baby's head through easily!

Blackduck · 27/02/2006 15:16

didn't work for me either!

Flossam · 27/02/2006 15:17

Never got round to it. Have to say that part of me remained intact, just damaged where DS tore me inside!

I used this, and it nearly worked (got a graze in the end 'cos DS stuck his hand up to his face as he was being born). What oil you use is pretty irrelevant - it's the stretching that counts - so you have to be prepared to do some pretty undignified (and uncomfortable) stretching for a few weeks prior.

But I'll definitely be doing it again for no 2.

Clary · 27/02/2006 15:41

yes I tried it, no it didn't work! (sorry)

Bugsy2 · 27/02/2006 16:21

yes I did & no, it didn't.

Not sure if it works but get your bloke to rub a bit in and it always leads to hot sex if you're in the mood!! I'm 37 weeks and have just rediscovered my libido!!! Grin

cathyspam · 27/02/2006 17:27

I did it and still tore but much less severe than first time - good luck. Smile

  1. Yes I did 2) No it didnt!

I tried it once or twice when pregnant with ds1 and it felt too wierd, so I didn't do it any more, despite being really worried about tearing (and even more scared of having an episiotomy). I didn't tear, not one tiny bit. Just some scratches, and I think they were from ds1, same as Gizmo.

So I didn't bother with ds2, same result.

Yes I did - got mine from Spirit of Nature - you can use it on your bump too.

Only teeny tear - m/w put in one stitch but she said at the time I probably didn't need it. I think she felt bored Grin

Can't do any harm!

Hello, quick note, I would definitely recommend trying it as I did it religiously during both my pregnancies and never tore once! That was despite being induced for the first one and having an epidural (classic tearing possibilities) and then having a very very quick home birth with the second! Surely it is worth it just in case! I was up the next day very happily after both births.
