currently +13 with DC4. bump feels really comfortable this morning.

so they will want to discuss a plan of care..

my plan was to have been in labour by now!

so my prospective plan was..

  1. all being well, rebook for next day/ next two days and stick with original plan (home birth) in the interim
  2. all not being well, then presumably C section..don't fancy hanging round waiting for things to go wrong.

is there a medium position i may not have considered? Seems very black and white but would hate to end up doing the whole pessary/ ARM/ drip thing to wind up with an emcs.

background: am very low risk. three previous births without trouble at +5, +10, +10 ..... wah! I don't usually get a warning that labour is imminent.

and what should i expect?

i have had expectant management with mine, i went to plus 18 with one!

they will moniter you and if you want they can do an internal and a sweep, that is totally up to you, they do the usual checks, blood pressure, wee test etc and moniter for 20mins to check on baby.

if you have had 3 normal deliveries there is every chance that an induction will work, depending on your cervix you may just need one dose of the gel or they may be able to break your waters.

i ended up being induced all 5 times! i am allergic to the gel so they just broke my waters and it worked, lovely births including a pool birth with ds4, so you wont necessaerily need the drip tho i did have it with dd i think that is more because she was back to back and i wasnt as overdue as normal (other issues led to me being induced at term plus 10 rather than waiting at least 2wks like i normally do)

i found the midwives lovely but got pressure from registrars/consultants to be induced, they may or may not want you to talk to a dr if you decide to wait a few days.

oh you can also request or they may offer a scan to check fluid levels, blood flow of the placenta etc.

ummm what else do you want to know? :)

EdgarAllenPimms · 24/06/2012 09:23

thats interesting 5mad thank you :)

i wouldn't mind pessary but i would rather give birth at home (and understand self-discharging after this problematic, with some good reasons).

so i suppose i could put it as

  1. rebook then HB
  2. marginal problems - pessary then consider action (as i'll be honest and say going down the induction route scares the bejeezus out of me)
  3. serious problem - c/s

I hope they are not going to try frightening tact

I am very big this pregnancy so expect they will try and weird me out about baby size. I think it isn't over 9lbs.

'tactics'

well i never self discharged but i know people that did, even after having their waters broken and went on to have normal home births! ditto with the pessary!

my babies were all big and yes they tried to frighten me with that, but ds4 my biggest at 10lb 13oz was my water birth! with no 5, they insisted she was big and i knew she wasnt, a scan said over 9lb and the consultant told me that i wouldnt be able to deliver a 9lb+ baby, i did point out if he read my notes he woudl see i had delivered 4 babies of 9lb+ one of which was almost 11lb, all naturally! he said that was just luck...

anyway dd was only 8lb! the smallest of my 5 and despite her being back to back i was only in labour 3 hrs, yes i needed the drip as i said but i still had a natural active labour, sat on birth ball etc, nad lots of gas and air. i kept mobile and upright and they monitered intermitentally, had their been any issue i would have let them moniter more but she was still very active and i and midwife were happy she was fine so we didnt do continuous monitering depite the registrar getting very cross with us about it!

they have to tell you the facts but yes they can be intimidating, stick to your guns! there is lots on mnet about going overdue and yes it is technically slightly more risky but only a tiny amount, the best indicator is you and how you feel, movements etc, the scan can be reassuring ie checking fluid levels and blood flow through the placenta.

and yes being induced is scary, i never wanted to but mine went really over due, ds3 by hospital dates was 3wks late (18 days by my dates) but my birhts were fine despite being induced, mobile, upright, normal deliveries, no complications at all, no forceps etc or anything.

given how overdue you are and that you have had normal deliveries i would expect it to be straightforward tbh, but yes get checked, re book for home birth and wait a few days and see how you feel, fingers crossed baby puts in an appearance before your next appointment!

most hospitals now dont induce till term plus 14 anyway so going a few days over that isnt that unusual, they did write in big letters on my notes PATIENT HAS BEEN INFORMED OF THE RISK OF STILLBIRTH!!! nice Hmm but the midwives i met were fine with me going further than 2 wks overdue and none of my babies looked overdue, still vernixy and my placentas always looks great, i always had a good look after they were delivered!

i take it you are doing all the usual, sitting on birth ball, just general stuff to encourage baby to be in a good postion to get labour going? i would do your best to relax, anything stressing you out wont help you go into labour, so hopefully once you get this appointment out of the way and then get home you can chill out and baby will put in an appearance! :) good luck :)

MrsTrellisOfSouthWales · 24/06/2012 09:53

Term is 42 weeks, so you're not overdue, personally I'd wait and see and accept monitoring and perhaps the odd sweep and a scan; book induction for 43 weeks as a back up... and go back and read the 'you can't have a homebirth if' pages on homebirth.org.uk Grin

EdgarAllenPimms · 24/06/2012 14:17

my fanjo is so sore i am not having anything up there until i am actually in labour and won't notice (if at all possible!) am getting back pain now. promising. but not labour.

yes i suspect by 43 weeks I'd be begging for induction...or something!

bouncing on birthing ball, have been for a long walk in my best knickers, and bought a cheesecake that i can't eat until baby is here.

Husband wants me to get it done before tonights match. How inconsiderate of me not to!

(he is joking)

yep, having been on MN a while you do get to know the way it goes, but it is very different being in that situation yourself and Not Panicking.

Fantastic!

EdgarAllenPimms · 25/06/2012 18:57

actually reading through those links was helpful as i tried some re-positioning as i felt baby had hand near pelvic brim and then promptly went into labour.

yes have been quiet about it - really wanted to get through it once more quietly. not much more to talk about pregnancy wise until the due date loomed and then started to get the fear of going into hospital... though as it turned out hospital was heaving and not even admitting people that wanted to be there.

all happy now!
