Apologies for TMI but just need to know if this is "normal"

Gave birth to DD 14 days ago via emergency CS. All has been fine with my recovery and am pretty active. My bleeding was pretty heavy (as expected) for the first 48hrs and then tailed off. I've not felt the need to wear a pad for about 4 days now and a couple of days prior to that had no bleeding.

Sudden this evening after going to the toilet, there seemed to be a lot of mucousy discharge so I put a standard pad on. Within 20mins, it needed changing as I had started bleeding heavily. I sat on the toilet and it dripped rapidly. There was also a very large amount of mucous that was kind of hanging out of me so I pulled it free.

I think the bleeding has now slowed but just wanted to check if this is considered "normal" or if I should seek further advice?

Are you breast feeding? As your uterus contracts back to normal size, you lose more mucous/blood, this can happen in fits and starts for up to 4-6 weeks and often happens each time you BF.

If however the mucous/blood is smelly and offensive, you need to see your GP.

Hope it sorts itself out!

Thank you for replying!
Yes, I am BFing. I think I was just a bit alarmed at the sudden quantity of loss. It did tail off though and no other symptoms so all well.

I had similar experience after my 1st csection. Bleeding had stopped then suddenly a few days later started again. Unfortunately mine carried in for a long time. Mw and doctor said I was probably being too active and not resting enough! If it were me, I would call nhs direct/mw/OOH. I'm sure its nothing to worry about, but just to put your mind at rest. Also, it is important to be up and about and keep mobile, but remember, you've had major surgery and you do need to rest and recover so take it easy :)

Thanks. I am being pretty active as I don't really enjoy not getting out and about and i've got 3yo DS too. No huge plans for tomorrow and DH home so will try to have a more chilled day feeding in front of tv.

I think I'd check it out with someone. Getting through one pad that quickly sounds quite full on. Might be nothing but I dint remember bleeding particularly heavily that long after my EMCS. If you starting getting through pads quickly I think they always like you to call. I know your just outside your 'window' with the post-natal ward but might be worth calling them for advice. They were great with me when I got a post op infection 2 wks after and told me to go straight in - I did end up getting admitted for 4 days of IV antibiotics though!!

Hi. I had a cs in feb, and bleeding stopped after two days. It then started again after two weeks, and I finally stopped at 11 weeks. It was pretty heavy at times, needing to change pads every hour or so. At my six week check the gp said to get in touch if it hadn't stopped by 8 weeks. But, by the time I got an appointment it had stopped.

All sounds normal but trust your instincts. The gp would far rather see you if you're worried. I was there every week for various things for months!
