2nd dc, home birth and natal hypnotherapy

I have just given birth to ds2, at home in a birth pool as planned. He is 9lbs15oz and apart from two brilliant midwives and my amazing DH I could not have for through it without my natal hypnotherapy. I strongly recommend this to anyone for a second birth. I knew where I would struggle to cope after my first experience and used all the coping strategies to get me through this time. It was an absolute life saver. The mw had no pipe for the gas and air so that only arrived an hour before delivery, but I think knowing that I had an extra resource of pain relief yet to come really gave me the boost I needed.
I would highly recommend a home birth, pool, tens and natal hypnotherapy to anyone. I know I was very lucky to have a four hour labour but these coping strategies made it all possible. Just had to share with anyone who may be considering these options.

This is hopefully what I will be doing in a few weeks time. DC2, hopefully at home in a pool. DS was born in hospital via induction, so I am really hoping to avoid that this time around. I am hoping this labour will be a lot calmer.

I haven't gone to any classes, but have been reading the book, and have the preparation for home birth CD that I have been listening to. I have also bought some beach relaxation music, to help with the beach visualisation.

The problem I have is that my mind wanders. I end up thinking about all kinds when I should be trying to relax and use the visualisations. So I worry that I just won't be able to focus during labour. Any tips?

What IS it with Mws and no pipe!? Hmm

Mine arrived at my hb on Friday with 5 bottles of G&A but no pipe!

Btw, I used the natal CDs with my second and found the birth a vast improvement to my first. However, I couldn't be bothered with the whiny voice this time and didn't do it. I did however, have the confidence from having had a good 2nd and KNOWING that I shoukd be able to find some internal resource.

I think the MOST significant thing both times was having a bossy doula though.

whenskiesaregrey I listened to the CD when i couldn't sleep or just before bed. i often found I couldn't concentrate and my mind would drift on to other things or i would fall asleep but the course taught me that this didn't matter and if I listened regularly it would sink it. The important bits really did. DH used 3,2,1 relax regularly, reminded me to breathe through the contractions, told me that all I need to do is breathe and relax, nothing else, my body would do all it needed so we could meet our baby. He kept saying breathe slowly and evenly. It was like repeating a mantra and it worked so well. He would tell me to simply relax and allow the birth to happen. He knew that when my breathing got too fast he needed to get close to me and breathe slowly and deeply near me, without touching me, to encourage me to match his breathing. It was so effective on my behaviour. He also knew that when i was shaking my head or 'self doubting' it was time to encourage me to change something, a slight position change, a slight breathing change, make noise or go quiet, have a drink etc.

I know I had a short labour but it was very intense and the tens let me focus so when I pressed the boost button I literally felt as if I was turning down the pain dial.

I'm really not a woo sort of person, I am genuinely surprised at how much it helped me to focus and I really do believe it can help you do the same. I didn't manage any visualisation on the day, I guess you only take what you need to from the CD.

One really important thing from the course was that I shouldn't get into the pool until at least 5cm dilated. Again, this gave me a 'next point' to get to, same with waiting for the gas and air!

starlight can't believe the pipe didn't make it in time for you, maybe I wouldn't have stayed so calm and in control in that case! Amazing that you achieved it with zero pain relief. I totally agree that the process was about giving me confidence and the knowledge to know that I could cope.

Thanks Down so did your DH listen to the CD with you a lot, or did you just explain to him what to do? We have agreed a physical contact thing (deep pressure on my palm) to help relax, but that is it up to now.

Downbytheocean · 18/06/2012 19:56

He didn't listen to the cd, I didn't think he'd buy into the music or visualisation side of things. I wrote notes from the course and book and he read these and referred to them whilst I was in labour. Mainly the points I wrote in my last post. As simple as they sound, they were the only things I needed to stay calm. I suppose if a contraction lasts a minute I only needed a few reminders to stay focussed. HTH.

Also we didn't agree a 'touch' because I hadn't wanted anyone touching me during my first drug fuelled labour! This labour was infinitely different and I think it's a good idea to have a touch relaxation trigger as you've done.
Also get a tens on at first sign of any niggles too.

I used it for my first birth 9 months ago

(a planned home birth)

I agree it was amazing, i highly recommend it to all pregnant women.

My labour was so pain free i didnt realise it actually was (proper) labour.... i had 1 examination as the midwife decided to pop in to see how i was doing (her choice to come round, i didnt insist) I was 7cm.... 20 mins later i was a mummy.

I had no drugs / pain relief and it didnt even really hurt that much either.

I will be doing the same for number 2
