A question about water birth and after birth

I was just wondering if when you have a water birth, do you need to stay in the pool to pass the placenta? also im thinking of giving birth at the oasis birth centre in Farnborough and I know epidural in not an option but would like to know if gas and air is available?

You deliver the placenta out of the pool

Gas and air was available for me when I had a water birth which was at a hospital

Thanks for that, I was thinking it might not be possible to get out of the pool with the placenta on the way! as you can probably tell, i've not done this before. :)

The midwife helped me out of the pool

It was all very relaxed

They like you to deliver out of the pool as it's easier to ascertain blood loss, I think. Also you will probably be ready to get out after you've had a cuddle with your baby - I know I was - I suddenly became aware the water had become a bit - er - mucky! But it is up to you.

You get out of the water once you have delivered the baby and the cord has been cut. They then clean the baby etc, and you deliver the placenta on dry land (they like to have a good look at it!) Gas and air is always available, even if you have a home pool birth. My second DC was a water baby - I LOVED the water birth. I honestly believe I had fewer stitches with second DC as the water had softened the skin (had 3rd degree tear with first DC). Am planning another with 3rd DC (although have to fight for it as have gestational diabetes, spd and underactive thyroid. Go for it!

I had visions of it falling out once I stood up after everything being...ahhem....stretched!

I've had three water births, first two times I delivered the placenta in the pool, last time they made me get out. I much preferred staying in the pool, even if the water was a bit mucky!

Gas and air was avaliable but I didn't use any, unlike my first birth not in the pool where I had LOADS!

In my experience you can do it where you choose at the time
