Transverse Lie and Measuring Small - Consultant on Friday - Any Advice on What to Expect

Had midwife app last week at 34+5, and was told I'm measuring 31 but this was probably due to baby being transverse - has been since at least 28 weeks. I didn't quiet understand what transverse meant at the time and while I was there she picked up the phone and made a consultant app for me this Friday when I'll be 36 weeks and said they may try to turn baby Shock if he hasn't already but not worry as i have a long torso and chances are he will turn himself!! The info only started to sink in when I got home and began reading up on transverse lie etc. nothing was mentioned about c-sections, hospital stays, muscle relaxants for them turning baby - not that i'm sold on that idea or possible complications if i go into early labour. Also have been booked in for scan to different hospital than the one where I've chosed to give birth, did have visit to chosen hospital yest and midwife showing us round explained much more about getting to hospital ASAP if i think I may be going into labour. I don't think he has turned still feeling kicks at the side and if he has been in this position all this time he is clearly quite comfy and there good reason for him to be in this position Hmm

Is this your first baby? Either way, don't panic, there's time and space for baby to move but with second or more babies there's usually more room and abdominal muscles are more relaxed which makes turning easier, whether naturally or with assistance.
ECV (external cephalic version) or turning your baby does have small risks as you read and it would be discussed in detail before you had to make a decision.
The scan will not only check the position of baby but also check placental position as sometimes the placement can get in the way of baby finding a comfy cephalic position. Sometimes transverse lie is due to increased liquor and they can check that too. There are a lot of possible reasons but until you have the scan nobody should be making plans for you.
Glad the MW at your chosen hospital was helpful and gave you useful info on early labour. Vaginal delivery with a baby who is transverse is not possible so a CS would be inevitable IF the baby stays that way so be prepared in case of early labour but think positive that there IS time to change.
Is there something specific that is worrying you?

Thanks for taking the time to reply traffic, you been really informative and helpful. It's my second baby and I too believe there plenty time for him to turn - I did notice i wasn't getting the kicks in the ribs i got with ds1 lol!! I would much rather giving him chance to turn himself but like you say until the scan i suppose no plans should be made.

IF he doesnt move round and I need a c-section, will I be admitted to hospital prior to cs to be on safe side or will this depend on position of placenta?? And if i measured small will they leave cs till nearer due date. I live over an hours drive from hosp have read this can make difference. Also had fast labour first time round.

Bet brain will go to mush on friday and will forget to ask the right questions Confused

It depends on your hospital if you would be admitted early. If you have a lot of fluid they might be more keen for you to be admitted especially since you live some distance from the hospital and had a fast labour last time. I agree with your midwife that the small measurement is most likely because of the transverse lie but your scan should give more info on that.
I would think have the scan, discussing the findings with the Consultant and if there are no obvious reasons for the transverse lie ask for his/her success rate with ECV and then decide if you want to go there. If not I would think they would be more inclined to go for an earlier rather than later CS but that depends if you prefer to stay at home (risks considered) or have a longer stay in hospital "awaiting events."
Good luck with your decision and remember to take a list of questions with you in case you forget!

You have been really helpful traffic - thank you for answering my questions :) I think I should stop over analysising and just wait till Friday and see what is said then - in the meantime plenty walks, bouncing on ball, scrub the floors Hmm and see if he gets into position himself. Hubby is away so will definately need to write down list of questions and hope they can do cs at chosen hosp IF that turns out whats is needed - thanks again :) :)

Just to update - Baby is in position, head down n making for the exit :) All scan measurements were fine - and after waiting an hour an half to see the consultant was told there was no need as all was as it should be but to go back in 2 weeks just to make sure. Phew!! - back to original plan . . . for now Wink
