What are the procedures/options if your baby is breach?

I am only 25 weeks but this not being my first pregnancy I just know something is up with the position of this baby.

It feels totally different. I can't feel any back or bum and all the kicks are very very low.

I may be imagining it of course but just curious over that the procedures are for a breach baby. My mum mentioned they will try to turn it - how on earth do they do this?!! From the outside? At what point do they say ok c-section it is. I think I would rather have a c-sec than gor for a v birth if baby was breach.

Any experiences? Anyone with a breach baby just sort of know the baby's position was funny?

I read an article saying that you should spend time on your hands and knees to encourage your baby not to be breach and avoid sitting slumped on the sofa. Unfortunately I tried this and DS1 was still breach. I decided to try for the baby to be turned even though I had heard a few stories about it being not very nice and some saying it was not a problem. Although I found it a terrible procedure I would try it again if I had another breach baby. Basically the scan you just before and ask you to bring in your maternity bag just in case and then I had some medicine to relax the muscles, led with my head down and the consultant tried to push the baby round. DS1 was a stubborn little so and so and would not budge. It got too painful so they stopped. Some babies do turn without the Dr trying to turn them and some turn then turn back. Babies have a habit of doing what they want! I also read lots of old wives tales about how to turn a baby but none of these worked. It was quite late on in the pregnancy when they do all of it so you have loads of time yet. I did lots of research on the internet and decided that if I could guarantee to have a Dr and midwife who were confident and experienced in delivering a breech baby then I would have gone a head but as this is near impossible on the NHS I decided on a c-section.

It is really early days yet but have a read up so you can make an informed decision.

There's still lots of time for the baby to turn by itself. If not they can try an ECV which is a manual turning of the baby, I think there is a 50% chance of that working. After that it depends on your hospital - mine used to advise auto c-section but they are now having breech natural births too.

I had an ECV, details on this thread a couple of years ago (nickname ethelina)

Personally I wouldn't have had an ECV if my two had been breech. I think babies are one way or t'other for a reason, and sometimes turning them can do more harm than good.

Dd turned quite late on. Boy that was an odd experience. She just did it all by herself. I made sure I didn't slump, walked a lot and got on my knees a lot too. There's plenty of time - try not to worry just yet.

Hey, google spinning babies, shows ways of turning the baby naturally- thing scrubbing floor position, this is why they think on old days ladies had less breech!
Fwiw I had a transverse baby till 38wk who then turned back to back so delivered down the chute rather than sunroof after all

Almost all babies are breech at 25 weeks.

Relaxxx.

StarlightMaJesty · 02/06/2012 20:57

They're supposed to be breech or transverse at 25 weeks.

If you'd said 35 weeks I'd still have said don't worry as plenty of time,

FrillyMilly · 02/06/2012 21:01

It's still early so don't get too worried. DC2 was breech until 35 weeks, if he had still been breech at 36 weeks I was going to be sent for a scan and then discuss ECV or c section. I would have refused the ECV and chosen a c section. He turned himself though. It happened one night in bed and was such an odd sensation. It actually made me sick!! I had really bad SPD so I didn't do much to encourage him to turn.

I do know someone who had a vaginal birth with a breech with no pain relief so there is that option. It's not for me though.

Don't worry about it at all at the moment. I am 27 weeks and had a 4d scan today. When we first went in baby was head tucked right down squished against placenta. Had a cup of tea, a biscuit and a walk and when we went back in she had turned completely and was breech. Whilst I've been sat down this evening I felt her turn again and can feet behind my ribs again. They have tonnes of room at this stage.

I've just had twin boys who took turns being breach, head down all the way up until I gave birth at 38 weeks. They were both breach for AGES and I knew this (apart from the millions of scans you get when you've got twins) as I could feel kicks in my nether regions. I also knew when one or other of them turned as I would feel hiccups down there instead!!!

Spinning babies website is OK, but I honestly think they just do what they want to do. I swam quite a bit and spent a lot of time telling them to get their heads down. Who knows if any of it works (probably not). My consultant was willing to deliver them breach, but it would only have happened if she'd been on duty, others in the hospital weren't comfortable delivering twins breach...Not sure if any of that helps, but I guess the message is 'be patient' (like that's possible!)

My baby is breech at the mo and am only 28 weeks so I know I have pleanty of time for him to turn. Had a quick natural 1st birth so would like this again but am terrified he won't turn and I'll have to have a c-section which unlike most people who seem to be very calm about it and not bothered I sooo don't want one and am very very scared if someone told me I had to have one I think I would burst into tears! Am probably being silly but for me natural is about 500 times better especially with a 2 year old who I pick up all the time and the thought of not being able to do this for 6 weeks!!
