Advice needed - cracked corner of mouth after using gas and air or is it a cold sore?

I had a baby on Tuesday and it looks like I managed to somehow bruise my top lip from breathing in and out the inhaler and also have what seems to be a cracked corner of my mouth.

Before getting myself all worked up about having a cold sore in the corner of mouth (it's very small and I noticed it about a day after birth), I would like to know if anyone had cracked corners after using gas and air?

i got a nasty crop of cold sores about 3 days postnatal - used gas and air and although i don't recall it myself, my mum said i was rubbing the mouthpiece round my mouth...maybe something like that?

Thanks mummmsy, did you take any precautions like not kissing baby and hand washing? I just read about how dangerous cold sores are to newborns, so started to panic a bit..

hmm was like 6 years ago now Grin baby was in scbu so did a lot of hand washing/sanitising anyway and did get to hold her for a few days, by which time i think they'd faded...i'm not aware of the dangers my self but would avoid kissing baby, just to stop them spreading

hate having coldsores, they're grim!

congratulations!

I might have the wrong end of the stick but I've interpreted your post to mean that you're worried about having caught a cold sore from the g&a mouthpiece? If so, do you remember if the mouthpiece of the G&A inhaler disposable? If so, then this would have improved hygiene and lessened the liklihood of catching cold sores.

Cold sores also have an incubation period so you wouldn't have seen one break out just a day later. G&A is notorious for drying the mouth so cracks are completely feasible.

Best to err on the side of caution, though: don't kiss your baby and be a stickler for hand-washing before handling bub as herpes simplex (the virus that causes cold sores) is indeed dangerous to babies as their immue system is so underdeveloped x

And congratulations! Thanks
