How do u know if your baby is back to back?

I keep reading that women go into labour not knowing that their baby is back to back. Do they or not scan first just to double check all is ok? Seems to me that thats the first sensible thing to do ...

DD was back to back and I ended up with a emcs after 30 plus hours and did not progress past 4cm. I think my midwife knew when she did my third and final sweep, and I also think they knew when I was examined but I did not find out she was back to back until well after I had FINALLY gotten my epidural after begging for it for 11 hours.

I think some HCP don't tell women because it makes them freak out - however I am not sure this is the right thing and I was certainly made to feel very guilty about having the epidural and it was only when I was sobbing about why nothing was happening 20 hours in and saying it was my fault for having the epidural that they had the good grace to tell me she was back to back.

A scan might not be costly or time-consuming in itself, but if every pregnant woman had to have an extra to check presentation, the NHS would need extra equipment and staff that they just don't have.

DD was back to back, it was noted at mw appts after about 38w; when I was in labour I was examined internally by about 3 different people, none of whom realised she was still back to back! Poor thing came out with a huge red bump on the front of her head from the ventouse (after I tried for about 2.5 hours to push her out, with no joy).

DD was back to back, but I didn't know until I was in labour. She was my first so I had never heard of it before that. She was finally born with the help of forceps after six hours of pushing.

sneakybiscuit that's an interesting observation! Both mine were back to back, my belly-button didn't POP and I carried tiny with both of them.

My midwife found that mine was back to back after a routine check up. He's due tomorrow - still time for him to shift (fingers crossed!)
