Anyone had any recent experiences at Mayday in Croydon?

Not very recent - 2003. 70 hour induction, botched epidural and botched episiotomy. Complaint against hospital. Terrible ptsd and pnd. Took me 8 years to even consider having another child - now 37 weeks with dc2 and having elcs due to birth trauma (in a different hospital).

They used to call it Maydie for a reason. There's a threead about how awful it is now in aibu - under croydon university hospital.

Up to you but I'd avoid at all cost.

I'm a local HypnoBirthing practitioner. I have been in there frequently recently. I think they do a great job and am happy to recommend it to my clients, especially the Birthing Centre.

Good luck!

I was born there and had Dd there in 2004. My friend is a trainee midwife there too. We both agree that the care is good except for postnatal which is generally staffed by misery guts midwives.

As a hospital it has always had an awful reputation but I am sure it must have much improved since this time else it would have been shut down

Hi there, I recently gave birth to DD at Mayday back in March and no complaints here. I felt I was looked after very well. I live 10 minutes away so it's the closest hospital for me and I really really appreciated that as I had several admissions to the antenatal ward and a readmission back to postnatal 3 days after DD's birth. Don't have a car so had to do a lot of cab trips - glad it was only a few minutes and a fiver as we were back and forth so much for weeks on end. I gave birth on the labour ward as I was induced at 38 weeks. Would have liked to use the birth centre but sadly not an option for me. Still, my birth was fine, had a great midwife who was very supportive, induction went incredibly quick, would have loved epidural but no time! No complications afterwards except jaundice for DD, hence the readmission. The pediatricians who looked after her were especially lovely and I had good care from all the midwives and various doctors I saw. Some midwives were a little friendlier than others, but none were rude or unsupportive.

Only real downside really is that it's BUSY. Very busy. And they are obviously underfunded and understaffed and feeling the strain. It can take a very long time to see a Dr, especially on antenatal or postnatal wards as the Drs spend most of the time on the labour ward dealing with emergencies and rightly so. Medication can take awhile to arrive so if you think you'll be wanting an epidural or other pain relief than g&a request early and be persistent. However, I imagine this is the case with most city hospitals these days and not particular to Mayday.

Hospital itself is a bit old and grotty but very clean. Housekeeping staff and catering staff are lovely - I always had clean sheets, fresh water and lots of tea and biscuits.

I know Mayday's got a terrible reputation but personally my experience was fine and I actually had better care there than at Kings when I had a MC in 2010. I won't go into the details but they were appalling.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your birth!
