Second child and second induction. Taking forever. First was started thus am and fr arrived on a sat night last year. Currenty in hospital waiting for second, am on third prostin in two days and still nought happening. Am 39 weeks. Everyone else on this ward has been, gone and through other side and I'm now just getting upset. I just want the hospital to get on with it and break waters and or use drip but no go. Was contracting during the night but all stopped. Hospital also seem to be taking sooo much time over everything although know i am getting very frustrated!

Oh poor you Sad. Seems strange that they haven't tried to break your waters...have you asked them to try?

littlemissnormal · 25/05/2012 12:01

Both of my inductions took 4 days of pessaries before I was dilated enough for them to break my waters.

You have my sympathy x

Last internal couple of hours showed cervix still thick and shut so they said there was no point even trying. Not sure how many Prostins they can do either.

Well, if your cervix is shut they can't break your waters! And if they can't break your waters there is no point putting up a drip as the evidence shows it will be ineffective or end up in theatre with a section and a PPH so that's their reasoning. 3 prostins is usually the limit and then if they can't ARM it's classed as a 'failed induction' and off to theatre for a section. However, some consultants will 'rest you' for 24 hrs and try a fourth prostin the following day. Just out of interest, why are they inducing you at 39 weeks? Also, have you tried nipple stimulation?

babyblabber · 25/05/2012 13:26

I was told 4 prostins over 2 days was the max. Then they were going to send me home for a day and then start again. Doc managed to break my waters after 3 but it was agony!

Good news is as it's your second it should be much quicker once tou get going. Fingers crossed for you!

Oh no! Its horrible when everyone else who you were booked in with has had their baby & you're still there. Have you asked any of the MW about what happens next? Presumably, there's a medical reason why you're being induced at 39 weeks. If nothing is happening & you know you're going to end up with a CS, it may be worth asking if you can go home for a few hours in between - see DC1, have a shower, re-pack your bag. I know I got really stressed during my protracted induction with DC1 as I was running out of fresh clothes & eating all of my snacks.
I hope it doesn't take too much longer.

I really hope you've had your baby now.

They tried to induce me at 39 weeks with DD2. 4 prostins over 2 days and nothing. The third day they gave up and allowed me to go home. I refused a c-section.

I went back in for another attempt at 40weeks and she was born the same day after a 1 hour labour.

Amazing the difference a few days made.

Oh bless you! I know exactly what you're going thru! I developed PE at 34 weeks and at 37 weeks they decided to start doing sweeps. Had 3 over a week and a half and nothing. My BP then went up again at my check up so they decided to admit me for medical induction on Monday. Had the propess put in (nothing!), then 24 hours of rest (nothing!), then 3 rounds of the prostrin gel over 24 hours, all with sweeps (nothing!). By this point it's Thurs am and they told me they'd get me down to delivery to break my waters. Didn't go until Friday evening - they were too busy. It was so soul destroying watching others come in and go off to delivery and I'm STILL waiting. Lots of hormone induced tears!!!
So, I go down on Friday night (8pm) and they break my waters and stick me on syntocin. 26 hours later and I was only 3cm!!! After all of that they decided to do a c-section. But guess what...theatre is busy with emergencies and I have to wait 4 hours and then, when I do go down and am about to be pushed through to theatre, someone yells 'hold on, we've got an emergency here!' and I got dragged out and put in a holding bay for another hour!!! So technically from my first sweep, my induction took 2 1/2 weeks!!! Still, my gorgeous DD is here and she was worth every tearful minute. Good luck my lovely! Remember, the best things come to those who wait ;-)

thanks all for the support and was glad to read at the time of others experiences although many worse than mine! well an update that DD2 arrived saturday and all well. Having gone in thurs am, three lots of prostins and friday evening and nothing I was pretty emotional and feeling crap! All happened pretty quickly after that.

Registrar came round friday evening and they decided to have a go at breaking waters. They came at 4am sat am to tell me there was space in delivery and took me up, DH woken at home and brought in. Broke waters (midwife said not easy but I was on g&a so no idea!) Contractions kicked in pretty quickly and had epidural at 3cm. Started getting pressure, checked after couple hours, fully dilated and DD arived with two pushes, no damage done!. So having gone to sleep fri night pretty upset, DD had arrived by breakfast sat. All good!

So the birth experience was great but the waiting beforehand was hell. Am wondering whether that is what makes induction such a bad experience for many.

It is trying to get the body to do something it is not ready to do. It has been described as one of the most serious ways of intervening in the process of pregnancy and birth.

Sometimes it is necesary but most of the time it is not.

Glad your birth was so positive. Congrats!

ButtonBoo · 01/06/2012 07:10

Sewer! Many congrats! Glad all went well. Sounds like your actual delivery was a breeze!! ;-)

ButtonBoo · 01/06/2012 07:12
