I'm 34 weeks today, my waters broke last Wednesday. Being induced today and I'm very scared. I have never been induced before so I have no idea what to expect.

Good luck. Soon you will meet your beautiful baby. Every birth is different- induced births can go quite fast but just go with the flow and know that at the end you will have your baby in your arms.

Hi Sparkly

Ooooh how exciting, you are going to meet your baby today!!

I was induced with DS2 at 35 weeks and it was really fine, infact much easier and a far more positive experience then DS1's spontaneous delivery which required an epidural, ventouse etc.

I think they do pessary (to soften the cervix) and sweep, another pessary 6 hours later, then some hours after that they put you on a drip to start the contractions. They may also need to break your waters at some point in there!

I was examined internally and hooked up to the baby monitor thing for an hour. Then I had a pessary put in and a sweep at 9am. The sweep was quite painful but not too bad. Read magazines and went for walks round the hospital during the morning. Had lunch in the cafe with DP. Waters broke quite unexpectedly without warning around 2pm and contractions started immediately. The staff started preparing me a room in the delivery ward and had paged the anaethatist for an epidural (induced labour can be more painful then "natural") but it was too late. DS1 arrived an hour later!

DS was a month prem and I had Obstetric Cholastasis so there were lots of staff around for the birth and DS was whisked off to NICU, I'm sure there will be lots of staff there for you too as your baby is a bit early too.

I wish you lots of luck for a safe and relatively painless delivery!!!

RickGhastley · 25/05/2012 06:19

Opps sorry, did not want to worry you by mentioning NICU, it's just that when they are small they will prob need some extra support and TLC.

I see from your profile that you are an expert in prem babies so prob have experience of this anyway!

SparklyGothKat · 25/05/2012 06:27

Yea I have visited the scbu and seen the new rooms they have now. Fully expecting her to go there for a few weeks. It's the pain I'm worried about as I have heard its more painful.

And I'm completely gutted as I think she would have held on for a few more weeks but having to be induced now

I was induced with both dc, ds1 was born within 3 hours and ds2 was a 20 mon labour! Ds2 went into scbu as he was small (4lb 14 at 38 weeks) but they were lovely in there. Good luck hope it all goes well today.

RickGhastley · 25/05/2012 06:43

I'm not sure if it was more painful or not? I had an epidural at 7cm with DS1(spontaneous) because I could not cope with the pain but no epidural with DS2 (induced)

Either it was just as painful or I have got tougher!!!

What I did find difficult was the speed at which labour progressed. I remember after about 30 minutes of labour saying I can't cope and I need an epidural because I had visions of another 12 hours of pain- the Dr told me I was 10cm dilated and that it would all be over soon and he was right!

Sirzy · 25/05/2012 06:50

I would try not to worry about the pain, I have nothing to compare to but when I was induced it was nowhere near as bad as I expected.

Good luck, I hope it all goes well x

RickGhastley · 25/05/2012 06:57

Oh and should add that I am a complete wimp when it comes to pain!

McPhee · 25/05/2012 07:03

Good luck for today Thanks

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 25/05/2012 07:11

Good luck Grin

Hope everything goes to plan. Thanks

I was induced but with early epidural so can't comment on pain. Process was pretty much as Rick describes with sweep and pessaries, but not much happened after that. They put the epidural line in before the drip about 1am. I slept for a bit and then had some pain about 6am, and when they examined me I was about 9 cm. An hour later I was at 10cm but there was a cervical lip, so they said they would slow me down for an hour to see if it corrected itself (it did), and then stop for an hour to let me rest. TBH, I still don't understand how this was done, but I was really surprised that it could be so controlled.

I went into active labour about midday, and I remember DP saying he could see the head. After an hour the conaultant appeared and wanted to start with a ventouse, but the midwife and I agreed we should try for another half hour. DD still didn't arrive and I felt I wasn't getting anywhere (I was induced because of a muscle disorder so this was expected) so the consultant came back and it all went a bit mad, then I was given DD just past 2pm.

It was all fine as far as I was concerned, much more controlled than I thought it would be and not scary at all. I hope you have a similar experience, good luck! Thanks

SGK I'm sure you're already well on the way but just to add, induction when your waters have already broken is often much easier than a standard induction.

I was meant to be induced after waters broke with DC1, they had policy of induction after 24 hours post PROM if babies had reached 34 weeks. By the time they examined me I was already 4cm so straight away they put the drip in for no apparent reason and he was out very shortly after that, tiny internal tear, no intervention, pushed him out v easily.

Hope all goes well with you

RickGhastley · 27/05/2012 11:09

Any news yet SGK?

Hope all has gone/is going well!

SparklyGothKat · 27/05/2012 15:44

I was taken for the induction Friday morning. Contractions started within an hour. Was examined at 5pm, 9pm and 11:30pm and nothing was happening. Fell asleep till 1:45am. Woke up and was examined and was 4cms. Doctor broke the rest of my waters and she was born at 2:20am. It was very intense and scary. I felt completely out of control in that last 25 mins. Midwife didn't even get to examine me as I just started pushing and knew she was coming. Baby girl was 5lb 2oz and is in scbu but doing very well.

Glad it's all gone reasonably well, SGK and congratulations on the birth of your baby girl!

revolutionconfirmed · 27/05/2012 15:46

Hi OP. I had an induced birth with DD1. Two pessaries got me going and twelve hours after the first contraction my baby was here! She was back to back and almost 10lb but I got her out and it was great. DD2's birth was spontaneous so no need to be induced but I'd say DD2's birth was more difficult!

SparklyGothKat · 27/05/2012 15:49

I will say that having the baby put onto my belly straight away and skin to skin is amazing tho. Grin

Lovely news. Grin

5lb 2 is a pretty good weight for such a early baby!

Do you have a name?

RickGhastley · 27/05/2012 19:26

Well done SGK!!!!

That's great news!

McPhee · 27/05/2012 19:51
