Hooray! My waters have broken, but should the baby be this active?

My waters broke at about 9.30 this morning and, very coincidentally and completely unexpectedly, the midwife called past at 11am to check me over (currently 39 + 6 with first). The baby was fine, heartbeat good etc, and the midwife checked she'd been moving.

However, after 5 or 6 all but pain-free contractions (sneeze birth, here I come! [naive emoticon]), the baby has become very active.

Is this normal or should I expect her movements to slow down a little? Could so much movement impede labour or wouldn't it make much difference?

Thanks in advance.

Oooh Live Birth Thread [Grabs popcorn and a sofa emoticon]

No practical advice whatsoever (pregnant with my first), contact your midwife if you are concerned, and keep us updated (where it is safe and convient to do so, obviously). Grin

Any change in movements should be checked out I think. It might be worth ringing the labour ward and see if they want you to come in for a CTG.

Hi there
dont know what is "normal" but ds1 was certainly still physically active during lbour

naturalbaby · 16/05/2012 16:06

I didn't feel ds1 move at all during labour, or just didn't notice (laid back, chilled out baby ever since!), ds2 wriggled a bit and moved around (manic baby who never sits still) and I felt ds3 move about a bit during labour (hyperactive toddler, never sits still either). Wink

do update us!

My waters broke at 7am last Thursday, I went into labour at 4pm that day. I had to go in for monitoring on CTG at lunchtime and baby was still very active Smile

However if it's very different movements from normal I would get checked out anyway.

Good luck!

Ha ha, thanks for all the replies.

I'm starting to think that the baby's protesting against the contractions. I'm really surprised that I don't feel more than a tightening sensation (not complaining at all) but she'll obviously feel a lot more than I do.

Labour ward says not to come in until contractions are 4 minutes apart and last for a minute, so I plan to amuse myself by repacking the baby clothes in my labour bag, watching rubbish daytime tv and messing around on mumsnet.

Ah, drat. Have phoned labour ward again because still no contractions and the midwife told me to go in to get checked. I'll be given an induction in the next 24 hours.

i had my heart set on a home birth and had a lovely understanding midwife...my waters broke and I had no contractions so she did a very thorough stretch and sweep to get things moving so I could avoid hospital induction. It was a bit sudden and intense but contractions started an hour later, ds1 arrived perfectly 6hrs later.
