Music for labour?

Was just wondering (not entirely seriously) what the best music would be to play in labour. (Assuming this is even an option for me, but that's a whole nother thread.)

Do I go with something classical and soothing? Or would something to scream along to be more the ticket (Norwegian black metal springs to mind)?

And what would be the most inappropriate tracks? Johnny Cash's "Ring Of Fire", obvs, and perhaps also "The First Cut Is The Deepest" by Cat Stevens/Rod Stewart et al. Not forgetting Salt & Pepa's classic hit "Push It".

I spent hours making compilation CDs of my favourite music - all types from indie to jazz to Beatles to disco etc etc
I loved it, it kept me going which was lucky as my labour was v long.
Well worth it, but do stuff you like, not stuff you feel to ought to like IYSWIM...

Seriously I would pick some music that is calm and relaxing with a slow beat that you can breathe in time too. You can take music with you anywhere if you have an MP3 player. However musical taste is very personal.

The best way to ensure a painfree labour is to remain calm and relaxed. Good music also distracts you from any pain.

I had a CD of very calm music called Celtic Tranquility which combined with the G&A had me all relaxed and breathing nicely right up to the pushing stage at which point I drove the MWs mad be blasting out Toto to motivate me a bit Grin

DD1 In birth centre and I had William Orbit "Pieces in a Modern Style" on repeat for 30 hours. I did NOT want any vocals.
DD2 In delivery suite - she came too fast. I had music etc in my bag - not even sure if we brought it in from the car! All I wanted to do was breathe.

I breathed beautifully to my eclectic music, had a natural active birth, and only used gas and air. The music gave me focus and recovery time to be normal before the next contraction.
having a variety meant earlier on I listened to my usual upbeat stuff, later on I had a choice for the more chilled relaxed music i also had from my collection.

If I'd had a quicker labour I am quite sure I would have stuck to the more chilled classical genre.however with nearly 24 hours in hospital labouring, the variety was handy. And blocked out the other screaming labouring women

Hi Fish , we meet again. That is so weird as I was just wondering about it today. I had no music with first birth but I was thinking how it can change your mood/perception etc as I was doing aqua aerobics when music cut out and then it wasn't much fum anymore!
I was wondering about Motown hits or if there existed something one might label as "uplifting ambient" haha

Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire.

I shit you not, but it's the only song I remember from DSs labour.

Underworlds 'Born Slippy' ??

I did two playlists, one more chilled the other higher energy. Used the chilled one for dd's birth 3 weeks ago. She was born to Tender by Blur.

Arf missgiraffe!

A friend of mine with a sardonic sense of humour has suggested "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia, and anything by Squeeze...

I found having songs I knew all the words to helped. I was mouthing along to the songs (not singing out loud, didn't have the breath for that!) and it helped me take my mind off the pain.

Both DCs were born to the sound of the Manic Street Preachers.

I must be weird as I had stuff like lmfao party rocking, the proclaimers and lots of Xmas tunes Grin
