Sorry I'm a frequent poster! Just few things I wish to know and find this site great!

Basically whatever the title says, when did you start using baby wipes on your babies bum?

OP posts:
Flisspaps · 04/05/2012 14:24

confuzed I've been doing DS's face with them since birth, and he's been slathered around the undercarriage with sudocrem twice after two particularly interesting poos.

Laurarj84 · 04/05/2012 14:34

Did it for about 6 weeks with DD1. But I used big square cotton pads from mothercare, which are great. I couldn't see how cotton wool balls would work and the poo is much too close to your fingers! The pads are as good as wipes I found and because you're using warm water I think the baby doesn't get as cold as they would with wipes. However, I will be interested to see how long I keep it up with DD2, arriving shortly.

arthurfowlersallotment · 04/05/2012 14:42

Right away. I am not faffing around with water and cotton wool at 3am when she's done a big wet poop and is slamming her feet in it.

I use baby bottom butter or sudocream on her bottom and no probs so far (fingers x)

Oh- useful tip- Lansinoh is great for dry skin on your baby's face and other very dry patches. And breast milk works for gunky eyes.

monkeymoma · 04/05/2012 14:46

oh not for ages, I have sensitivish skin on my face and most baby wipes are one of the most irritating things I can use on it, so IMO a big no for newborns, apparently you can get "water wipes" in boots which are just cotton and water

Lunarlyte · 04/05/2012 14:49

From the beginning. Just make sure that you get fragrance-free ones. We also use Bepanthen on our newbie's little tooshie xx

monkeymoma · 04/05/2012 14:49

and sudocreme has tried to do a lot of education about its correct use

it's not supposed to be slathered, it's supposed to be rubbed in, if it's a thick white layer and you can't see any skin under it you're using it wrong, it should be whiteish with some skin tones visible through it and fully removed before next application

pinkpeony · 04/05/2012 14:59

DC1 - around 6 weeks as recommended (water and cotton until then)
DC2 - almost from birth, as discovered a new brand on Ocado called Water Wipes that are just that - 99.5% water & 0.5% fruit extract.
Their skin is so delicate at birth (and I have ultra-sensitive skin so didn't want to take chances with little ones).

Flisspaps · 04/05/2012 15:07

monkeymoma then I'm using it properly Grin

Billy11 · 04/05/2012 16:04

after 3 to 4 months..i was told by the midwife the wipes are too harsh to use on a newborn...
used water and cotton pads

nickelhasababy · 04/05/2012 16:07

it was 5 weeks.

I didn't mind using the cotton wool and water, it wasn't a hassle, but when I came back to work, I kept forgetting to fill the water, or I'd knock it over.
so it became easier to use wipes.

still used cotton wool at home for another 2 weeks, though.

startail · 04/05/2012 16:09

The second I left hospital with DD1 and from birth with DD2, (another of HBs advantagesWink)

nickelhasababy · 04/05/2012 16:09

BTW - top tip for cleaning off baby tar - use dry cotton wool (and not balls, but those pads you use for your face) - it works. then you use wet for cleaning.

notcitrus · 04/05/2012 16:09

Ds - age 2 years or so, except when out which was from around 3 months.

For dd, from day 2 when she got home from hospital and I couldn't find my cloth wipes. Cotton wool is the work of the devil - takes about 10 balls to clean her bottom (forgot to take pack of wipes up to the change table this morning). I use the supermarket fragrance-free wipes and never had any nappy rash at all.

I've never used cream on her either except for metanium about 6 times in 3 months when there was a red dot that might have developed into rash.

lagoonhaze · 04/05/2012 16:11

The second the midwife wasn't looking!

duchesse · 04/05/2012 16:20

As soon as we got home. Used up the cotton wool they discharged her from nicu with and then used wipes everafter.

JulietMontague · 04/05/2012 16:25

Straight away, and when the midwife pulled her face I pointed at DDs meconium covered arse and pointed out that cotton wool would simply decorate it. (it was my second child, I think you don't sweat that stuff so much with dc2).

SchrodingersMew · 04/05/2012 16:27

Straight from birth but I used the "water wipes". DS was transferred to SCBU for monitoring and I was asked to leave his things and I left the wipes there and by next morning they had disapeared. Hmm I made a right fuss about it as they were bloody expensive.
SCBU said that it must have been whoever transferred him and they should never have touched them but our hospital is actually well known for actually confiscating baby wipes. Hmm

Surely that's theft? I mean if I started binning stuff from the hospital I would be thrown out or police involved? Angry

Why would anyone buy 'water wipes' when water comes out of your taps? Confused

BornToFolk · 04/05/2012 19:45

Celtic, I'm with you! We used disposable wipes sometimes for convenience but mostly just used flannels and water. I dread to think about the amount of money people must spend on wipes if used for every single nappy change Shock

monkeymoma · 04/05/2012 19:47

celtic, the same reason people use other disposable wipes!

TerraNotSoFirma · 04/05/2012 20:20

I took cotton balls in my hospital bag, Midwife handed me babywipes and said ''Things are going to be hard enough , Make things as easy on yourself as you can''

I LOVED my midwives. (Well with my first born, The second lot of MW's were not so lovely)

MadameChinLegs · 04/05/2012 20:25

From birth. I use a mix of Johnsons or Huggies whatever I get when Im shopping.

petitfiloser · 04/05/2012 20:25

ummmmmmmmmmm, when the baby was born!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nicklenackle · 04/05/2012 20:30

I use washable nappies so I don't use disposable wipes at all, just cotton flannels and warm water from the tap. They work brilliantly, but obviously it's ok when you can just chuck them in the nappy bucket - I wouldn't bother otherwise, it'd be Huggies wipes all the way.
