Anyone confused about the due date..your own calculation vs the scan measurements?

The scan measures the baby a week bigger than I think it is...the 28 day cycle was used to pinpoint my due date though my cycle is much longer 34 days which i think makes my due date a week later!
Why am i anxious as i will most probably have an elective c secition at 39 weeks which according to my calculation makes 38 weeks...and i really don't want the baby to have breathing issues cuz we took it out too early ..
am i being silly?

Chill. Baby born after 37 weeks are full term, so even if it is wrong, baby will be fine.
At the scan they use measurements to work it out, and depending on when you OV depends when baby starts growing, so could still be 1 week out.

Hth, it'll be fine Im sure x

I'm pretty sure my dating scan was the same as you: they put me one week ahead of when I'm sure we conceived (baby conceived using Clomid, so 'on it' as far as my ovulation time was concerned).

DD2 was born by ELCS 2 weeks ago and I'm convinced my dates were right. DD1 was a VB born at 40+2 weighing 7lb 5oz; DD2 was officially 39+3 and weighed 6lb 9oz. I think it was actually 38+3 because as they gain about 6/7oz per week in the womb, she would have been roughly the same size as her sister (maybe slightly heavier) if she'd gone to 40 weeks from 38 IFSWIM.

But Penguins is totally right: 37 weeks is term. DD2 is just perfect, scored 9 both times for her Apgars (same as DD1). Dont worry xx

InmaculadaConcepcion · 04/05/2012 08:34

Yep, another discrepancy here. The dating scan would have it that I conceived on CD4 which is unlikely because I'd barely finished my period at that point and DH and I hadn't done the deed for four or five days previously. I was watching my cycles and symptoms pretty closely as we were TTC and I reckon we actually conceived on day 12/13.

Because I'm over 40 and post CS birth first time round, the HCPs will want to book me for a ELCS on my "due date". This bothers me because I want to try for a VBAC as I really don't want an extended hospital stay or the long physical recuperation of a CS with a toddler to look after too.

You, like me are within your rights to refuse to be induced/have a CS on the date they recommend - they can't force you! Provided you understand the risk factors involved of leaving it. Some studies suggest over-40s who go overdue have a greater risk of stillbirth (other studies incidentally suggest not - but HCPs nowadays are erring on the side of caution).

If my LO hasn't arrived by the supposed "due date" I shall request that I'm given another week, provided no other health issues and the fetal movements remain consistent. You could do the same if you're concerned about it.

(Incidentally, my DD arrived 4 weeks early so all this may be academic if this LO follows suit..!!)

Well the dating scan sais i am 26 weeks and i think i am 25...i am not 100 percent sure though ...
My only worry is that since babies born via c sections generally have more chances for breathing issues I don't on top of it want baby to be early ...
but seeing my condition i dont want to go in to labour and have an emergency c section ...i think will just leave the decision to the doc ...will discuss it in the next appointment...I didnt really get much time with him this week

If it's any comfort Billy DD was born by EMCS at 36 weeks (she was breech, I went into labour spontaneously) but didn't have any breathing difficulties at all.

Do you know what you're having yet? If it's a girl, an early delivery will likely result in fewer (if any) problems because female fetuses tend to develop around four weeks ahead of male fetuses.

Flisspaps · 04/05/2012 15:40

My scan put me 10 days ahead of 'my' date - DS was born at 40+11 by their dates. By my dates I went into labour on my EDD and DS was actually born in the early hours of 40+1.

I like to think that I was right Grin

dondon33 · 04/05/2012 19:41

IC- how long since your last section? it's usually if you had your last in under 2 years isn't it? that they will insist on another. I know a few women 40+ who have had VB with no probs. Or is it a mixture of the 2? Sorry I ask you but my sister is due in June and she is terrified as the Dr has told her she WILL deliver naturally even though she has had problems with her womb- had an EMCS 6 yrs ago-got an infection that caused all sorts of probs resulting in her womb sticking itself to the scar tissue on her abdomen wall which went undiagnosed for ages- 2 ops to put all back where it should be over the next few years. She was told she wouldn't be able to ever deliver naturally as there is a big risk it will rupture her womb so always thought that she would have ELCS this time. She's really stressed by it. She would like to try VB but doesn't want to then go to panic stations with EMCS again.

I thought my dates were wrong with 2 of mine, 1st just by 5/6 days but the 2nd was out by 10 so when I delivered him he was really about 12 days overdue. Midwife also agreed due to his really long nails and flaky skin.

Good luck with your birth xx

FutureNannyOgg · 04/05/2012 20:22

I'm not confused, but for both my babies the scan date was 3 days earlier than the earliest possible date I calculated from conception (i.e. assuming the baby was conceived on the day of ovulation, or sex, when it could have been 2 or 3 days later but definitely not earlier)
38 weeks isn't too early, but you could talk to your consultant about putting it off until a week later and see what they say.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 05/05/2012 07:58

dondon it will be 2 and a half years post CS for me. The ELCS is because in most cases, the medical profession prefers not to use induction following a CS because of concerns the stronger contractions may rupture the old CS scar. They do induce in some cases, I believe, but generally no.

They're keen for me to have a VBAC if possible, but they were very good at making it clear that was my choice and I didn't have to if I didn't want to. Your sister is now within her rights to insist on an ELCS if she's worried about a VBAC - there have been changes to the guidelines recognising a woman's right to choose an ELCS. Sounds like your sister's got good medical reasons to want to avoid a vaginal delivery, can't say I blame her. Good luck to her in getting the delivery she would prefer!

dondon33 · 05/05/2012 12:59

Good you were given the choice IC, It's not fair if you feel forced into a situation that you can't control. Hope you have a happy, smooth birth with your little one xxx
I told my sis to push it, no pun intended lol, if she feels she would rather have ELSC. She does want to experience VB, the first time she laboured very quickly for a first baby, just a few hours of contracs and she was fully dilated ready to push but then all hell broke loose which resulted in the EMCS (baby's heart was going haywire and we nearly lost her, which we later found out was due to 3 holes that were diagnosed much much later...another story...) anyway- sis quite enjoyed the experience upto that point- so maybe from her records they know she was quite quick at getting there- could be why they want her to try possibly? but yeah, what if they need to induce her that ups the risk of rupture so maybe she could make an agreement to try VB if she goes spontaneously but if she goes over get them to agree to the ELCS. I feel really sorry for her at the moment- It is HER choice with very good reason but they are taking it away from her.

Billy11 · 05/05/2012 13:24

I am having a boy...I have some comfort that even at 39 weeks for the elective c section even if they dates are wrong i will at least be 38 weeks.
Also I know my cycle is 34 days but I am not ABSOLUTELY SURE that I ovulated later as well...even in a longer cycle i suppose i could have ovulated a bit earlier ...
So anyway ...I will get the doc to keep an eye on the size of the baby although I think the only scan that is used to confirm baby gestational age is the 12 week scan ...
So will put my trust in the doctor...

Yes, once you're up to that stage, developmentally the fetus should be fine Billy, whatever the sex. Do whatever you feel is best for you!! Good luck x

Billy11 · 05/05/2012 15:50

thanks ...pretty much decided unless baby comes early an elective c section it is
