What would you do? 41 weeks, back to back baby, induction in 3 days...

Hi all

The title says it all really. This is my first pregnancy, I am at 41 weeks today and in a lot of pain. I have had SPD since around 16 weeks, so it's been a painful and inactive pregnancy, which is probably contributing to the pickle I'm in.

Went for a sweep this morning, didn't happen, the midwife couldn't reach my cervix and it's not ready. The baby is only 2/5 engaged. He has also turned and is now back to back.

My induction is booked for friday, but I can decline and delay over the weekend if I'm not sure. I'm not sure whether to accept it is going to be awful and get it over with, or pray for some kind of baby-turning and natural labour miracle in the coming days.

I wanted to avoid an epidural because of the SPD, not wanting to not feel anything / be in a bad position which could make my recovery worse. But I fear the combined pain of induction and back to back baby, so am now considering this.

Has anyone been in this position? I'd really, really appreciate it if you could let me know your experiences / hold my hand please.

Thanks.

Politico - An update: I found out on Monday that my baby was back to back. I had one session of acupuncture and spent a lot of time on all fours. I found out today that the baby has turned, so it can happen in a short time. Obviously I've got no idea whether it was the acupuncture (she did specifically try to turn the baby but said she wasn't making any promises) or the being on all fours that did it but I would say both are worth a try. I'm 39+3 today and am planning on spending the rest of the pregnancy crawling about. I know it'll be tricky with your SPD but it's definitely worth doing what you can. Good luck!!

Thank you all so much for your messages - I was so upset on Tuesday but I'm feeling a lot calmer and more positive and less alone now!

PotteringAlong thanks for your positive induction/epidural story, it's nice to hear that you can have one and it not massively affect your mobility. DP and I are revising my birthplan this evening ahead of tomorrow, so will definitely not rule it out.

RnB wow, you are a brave woman! I haven't been told my Bishops Score, as the midwife couldn't reach my cervix the other day, but looking at that link it's probably not terribly high either - posterior, no show (ie not softening etc). Great to hear that they can turn in labour and it can turn into such a positive experience, and that the drip is not necessarily something that is impossible to cope with.

LoveTheCarbs that's really helpful to know about the mobility aspect and the length of time it can take. Sounds like you had brilliant support from the midwives to keep you and your baby calm, and needing minimal intervention. Hope things go easier for you this time! Best of luck.

MrsFoogles thank you for letting me know how you got on, and I hope your next birth is a lot easier for you. Knowing that there are some things which can be done is making me feel a bit more in control, which is calming me down, even if the prospect is not a great one.

SneakyBiscuitEater gosh, it just goes to show, doesn't it?! Amazing how fast your first two births were. The birth of your DC3 sounds like it could have been so stressful, but it sounds like you took it all in your stride. Thanks for letting me know it's not necessarily going to be awful. I'm going to get DP to get me some chocolate for my labour bag on his way home tonight!

FruitSaladIsNotPudding thanks so much for the link, really helpful!

pootlebug thanks for letting me know your experience, again, it just goes to show how unpredictable these babies are! Two days after my attempted sweep, still nothing other than back pain, so I'm going to go ahead and get it over with I think, I'm not sleeping and I'm not feeling great, so I now want it over with. I'm hoping the SPD will make my pelvis have a bit more room for manouevre, if you know what I mean, although it will also make me less mobile. Hard to know

lovechoc I'm sorry you had a rough time but I really appreciate the good luck wishes, and thank you for letting me know your experience, it is all helpful.

Coconutfeet that's brilliant news - so pleased for you! :)

Right, back to being on all fours... Will be going to hospital tomorrow to start the pessaries, so will post again when it's all done! Eeek!! I'm just going to go for it, I am desperate to meet my baby now!

Thanks

Good luck politico, hope it all goes OK for you

Coconutfeet · 03/05/2012 09:55

Good luck Politico - I really hope it goes well for you. By the way, my hospital has got inflatable birth pools on the consultant lead part (previously only available on the midwife-led bit) and they also have mobile monitors that allow them to continuously monitor you in the water. Could be worth asking for if you think that would help with the discomfort?

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 03/05/2012 10:18

Good luck!

pickledpeppers · 03/05/2012 11:43

Good luck Politico. Fingers crossed that it all goes quickly and painlessly for you

MrsFoogles · 03/05/2012 13:41

Please come back after the birth and let us know how it went! It's great to hear stories from women who've made a positive experience out of a potentially unpleasant situation. It's dead scary when the medical professionals are telling you that your own body's instinct is wrong and your in for a rough time. I love to hear of women taking control back and doing everything in their power to have the birth experience they want as I'm sure you will!

It's so amazing meeting your little one for the first time, I can understand why you're so excited :)

Women! We are strong!

politico · 12/05/2012 13:39

We women are strong! :) Thanks all for your messages of support, just to let you know how it went. We had our beautiful boy last saturday. Labour was positive overall, but we had some post birth complications hence the delayed reply.

I ended up only needing 2 prostaglandin pessaries to get me to 2cm, then my waters were broken. That was almost the worst bit, as we were just on the antenatal ward and I only had painkillers overnight. We didn't need the drip as things had kicked off so successfully, and we did it on gas and air over the next three hours. So much for fearing a long slow labour! He turned himself around at some point, thankfully, and all in all, it was manageable. I was so thankful. Bit of tearing, as he was over 4kg, but I've been stitched up and am hoping to make a full recovery.

Afterwards, my BP was low for days, then he lost weight as I couldn't produce milk... however, we've turned a corner and are home now and just so happy!

Thanks

I'm with babieseverywhere

pickledpeppers · 12/05/2012 18:34

Congratulations politico it's amazing that baby turned himself around on the way out! Well done you!
It's great to hear positive stories of induction and back to back deliveries. I'm due to see the consultant on Monday when I'll be 40weeks, I've been told they'll do a sweep then see me 2 days later to check and possibly start induction. I just want it over with asap, baby is still back to back as I've had no luck getting him to turn but maybe he'll turn on his way out like yours. On a positive note I've been having cramps and a show today and lost the mucus plug so maybe my body will do its own thing before Monday!

Congrats again!

RnB · 12/05/2012 19:49
