Hemmorrhage during emcs, would it happen again?

Hi, looking for a bit of advice either from anyone who's had similar or any professional advice please! Ds was born at 42+1 by emcs after I failed to dilate more than 3cm despite being on synotycn (also had epidural if that makes a difference). My womb wouldn't contract and I lost 5 pints of blood, dh was told they would 'try and save me' which thankfully they did but I had a balloon in for a day as they thought they might have to remove my womb. Any ideas on what the chances would be of this happening again? My hospital de-brief was a consultant drawing a triangle and telling me 'this is your womb. It bled. It MIght happen again. It might not.' am thinking about having dc2 but was a pretty horrific experience for dh last time so I'd rather be a bit fore warned. I was away with the faries obviously and didn't mind at all! Not sure I'm too keen to relive the experience though... Cheers.

I had a similar experience, although only 4pts lost, but I had an induction, synctosin and epidural, they struggled to stop the bleeding etc. I was under the impression that the blood loss was partly because I had been on the drip for 24hours and my womb was basically knackered (it was Put a bit more technically than that!), so whilst there is a risk of the same thing happening again my next cs wont be after 24 hours contracting and the medical team will know my history and be prepared for any similar problems. I wasntadvised that future pregnancies would be a problem, just that a cs would be recommended and I am now pregnant again.

Thank you, I kind of figured that would be the case but its much better to hear it from a real person other than my rubbish consultant who just seemed to be trying to avoid a compensation case! CS sounds like a much better idea, hope you have a better experience this time :)

I've had a consultant go through my theatre notes with me and was told that I wasn't at higher risk of it happening next time than anyone else regardless of the history as it was just related to that labour rather than a physical problem I will carry on to fufure pregnancies IYWKIM

good luck

Hi, my first birth sounds identical to yours, lost 2.5 liters and womb was 'slack' (llovely term). I had a planned cs few weeks ago and they were v prepared for blood loss but only lost .5 liters... My womb was still but slack but v positive experience compared to 1st birth :)

I understand the trauma of awful births and the fear for a second but personally I'm thrilled I tried again and now have my ds. Maybe chat through concerns with your doctor?

Good luck with dc2 if u decide to go for it!

Thank you :) 'slack' womb, huh? I wonder if anyone manages to get through childbirth without a couple of offensive sounding terms being thrown in!

nope valium Grin I got "oh, your nipples aren't very good are they?" when trying to BF in hospital

(still don't know why? - they're average size/colour/position, not inverted...)

Been on syntocinon increases your risk of having a pph by 1.7x. I would imagine the risk is more the longer you've been on the drip.

If you've had a pph once you are at an increased risk of having another.

There are other risk factors such as having had a long labour, having an emergency section, raised bmi.

Next time round whether you have a vbac or an el lscs you could ask the hospital about having 40iu syntocinon straight after delivery as a prophylactic dose to try and prevent it reoccurring. Lots of hospitals do this now to anyone at a raised risk of bleeding, Inc previous pph.

Hi I had a csection 17 weeks ago with my 4/5th babies (twins)

I had vagibal births with my 3 other children and no bleeding problems at all!!

I bled a lot but they were all prepared for it, I had to have syntocin drip for a few hours after and I was properly looked after .. I think because I was having twins sOmetimes your uterus gets lazy so they were ready for it and it wasn't a problem as such, so if your a high risk they will be ready for it and prepared so in a way safer? If that makes sense?

Yes, thanks all, some really good and reassuring advice on here!

I had ds 2 on April 12.

Water broke at 6am. There was meconium in my waters so went straight into hospital. To cut a long story short I wasn't dilating with syntocin etc so was taken for a
C section around 10pm. Ds was born at 10.26 but my uterus had ruptured and he was in my abdomen when they went in to get him. I ended up needing 12 pints of blood. I was in theatre until 4am and then in ITU. I needed a 2nd op 2 days later to remove the packing which had been left in to stop bleeding.

I hadn't had any previous c sections so what happened was extremely rare. There was no sign that Indicated a rupture may happen. I was monitored constantly in hospital because of the meconium and they took blood samples from ds2's scalp during labour to check his oxygen levels which were fine.

Ds2 is doing great and I'm on the mend. I have my 6 week check with consultant at the end of the month but from initial chats with him while I was still in hospital he said i could get pregnant again but I would be closely monitored and would need to have a planned c section at 34 weeks. We had planned one more but I don't think I would risk it.

SandyChick · 05/05/2012 16:25

Sorry I meant my previous post to sound positive reading it back it sounded the opposite. Even after what I've been through I have never been told that I shouldn't get pregnant again.
