I'm 40 weeks today, been having contractions so regular past few days, yet only dilated to 1cm. Really could do with having the baby this week, busy few weeks ahead, I know they come when they want but wondered if any of you tried some encouragement and had some luck? I'm thinking a vindaloo :/

Warm bath, long walk (not far though), spicy food, raspberry leaf tea.... best to try to relax, so pop a good film on and put your feet up. Keep telling your baby (in your head) 'get a move on! I cant wait to meet you.'

Rest now, becase you won't get another chance for about.... oooh 18 years or so.

Good luck!

doormat · 25/04/2012 14:51

confuzed.. none of the curries, sex, pineapple stuff works ime... as fp says just chill, relax and you enjoy wat free time you have left...in fact cherish it...as it will never be the same again lol...hope all goes well x

confuzed90 · 25/04/2012 14:56

Lol well I have a 3 year old DS, so the relaxing can be a bit difficult lol. Urgh not sure whether to at least try the curry, I don't like them but I think I'm clinging onto all hope possible! DS was induced and overdue, really didn't want it this time round!

lol give it a go if you feel you need to, cant hurt..wishing you all the best x

Frontpaw · 25/04/2012 15:05

oh yes - i forgot about sex. It releases the same hormones as in childbirth so is supposed to work.

Try to keep busy - maybe pop on a family film or do some craft things as home.

confuzed90 · 25/04/2012 15:16

I need to do something! I'm going insane..was in hospital yesterday, contractions every 10 minutes, monitor was picking them up to, just hadn't dilated any more than what I was. Got really painful, went to bed and woke up this morning with just crampy and achy periody feelings.
I have tried sex, fair enough this sounds embarassing, and TMI (sorry) but my partner doesn't last long, no longer than 5 minutes, and there isn't role play or anything other then the typical 'get it over with' method! How bads that I know, just neither of us feel up to it. So that might be why sex hasn't worked.

The more stressed you get... the longer it takes. Can you put on some nice music and try just lying down for a while?

debka · 25/04/2012 15:18

A friend of mine went down the vindaloo route.

It worked, but she had violent, curry-reeking, projectile diarrhoea throughout the birth.

I wouldn't recommend it, unless you really dislike midwives Grin

thing1andthing2 · 25/04/2012 15:45

If your digestive system is used to hot curries it won't work. I think it works by sending your bowels into spasm and the contractions in the bowel bring on contractions in the uterus. I'm partial to a hot curry which means they don't have any effect on my bowels really. I was out at 40+12 with DD eating Thai food so hot it nearly made me cry. I had a good sweep next morning and took caster oil which really did give me diarrhoea but labour didn't start till all of that had settled down and I'd accepted I was going to have to be induced. Resigning myself to that seemed to relax me!

CaptainHetty · 25/04/2012 16:01

I don't think any of this really works, to be honest. Try a warm bath, relax and chill out for a while. I hope things get moving for you soon x

confuzed90 · 25/04/2012 16:12

Thankyou..no I'm reaaallyy not used to hot foods. I never eat spices or chilli or curry. Because I just don't really like them. I think furthest I go is chippy curry sauce and them birds eye mild chicken curry! Does it honestly work?? If so what would you recommend? Scared of the indigestion! X

thing1andthing2 · 25/04/2012 16:25

Getting your bowels going with something like chilli or caster oil was the way they tried to start labour in the old days before they had things that really worked (e.g. prostin). It's a bit hit and miss I assume, and would probably appear to work if you were just about to go into labour anyway, but not otherwise. Plus you'll have to suffer with the diarrhoea and cramps before labour which wouldn't be that nice. I won't be trying it again this time (30 weeks pg) but was so overdue with DD I was willing to try anything.

CharltonHairstyle · 25/04/2012 16:31

Well, I went into labour at 41 + 3 days just after one of DP's (very hot!) homemade chicken curries that was laced with pineapple ( I must have eaten hundreds over the couple of weeks!)
Oh, I was also constantly bouncing on that bloody ball...

Still, could of just been a coincidence.

Congrats BTW GrinGrin

Kayano · 25/04/2012 16:31

I rugby tackled my husband on a Sunday might and had a baby by
Monday.

I had a thread on chat Grin

The answer it would seem Wink

EdlessAllenPoe · 25/04/2012 16:35

i got into labour with DD1 after spending an hour lumping the ingredients round sainsburys forgetting things (had selected handbasket, big mistake)

my waters went whilst i was cooking it, so i suppose it worked!

mammyemcbe · 25/04/2012 16:42

The spicy food and sex worked for me last Wednesday night Grin dd was born last thursday morning .

confuzed90 · 25/04/2012 17:16

Congratulations mammyemcbe...so after all that deciding I haven't ended up with a curry for dinner. :( didn't want to risk the indigestion for nothing. I am just going to have to accept induction :( I feel completely fed up now of wishing him to come.

this is going to sound really odd, but do you have a breast pump? the birth book i have says putting yourself on a breast pump for an hour or two a day often brings on labour for the same reason sex does, it releases all those hormones.

the book actually says nipple stimulation is used in some hospitals before they try induction.

you can also just rub/roll them apparently, if you don't have a pump. can't speak from experience but maybe that will help!

Frontpaw · 26/04/2012 06:40

The baby can't stay in there forever! Any news?

confuzed90 · 26/04/2012 07:45

I have tried nipple stimulation, definatly brings on contractions but they don't stay.

Well not much to report, apart from lost a tiny bit of bloody in a big lot of mucus last night (I had already lost my plug) and the contractions have been carrying on, through out the night, still not much regularity to them or increase in strength, their worse then 2 days ago but nothing to scream about yet. Been like this since monday, I am shattered :(

whatever would help you get some good sleep: do that?

you need rest!

CaptainHetty · 26/04/2012 09:38

Baby must be very comfortable in there confuzed!

My sister was very similar to you, it started and stopped for a few days before baby eventually arrived. Have you spoken to anyone from the labour ward? Maybe they can examine you see if you're getting anywhere? Hope you manage to get some rest :)

confuzed90 · 26/04/2012 09:57

Started having some more bloody mucus this morning. Cramping, and very very achy down there. DS is at nursery so I'm laid in bed trying to relax a bit. But bit difficult with all this happening and the aches and pains it brings along with is. I don't understand why it is taking so long. Monday I started with the contractions but I'm just not progressing, but hoping that the blood is a good symptom as with DS (I was induced) I started with bloody mucus after I dilated more then 1cm :/ xx
