How many c-sections are safe?

I have a relative who is about to have her 4th ecs.

I'm concerned about her. I think her and her partner will keep having children without really considering possible dangers to her body. I brought up the idea that they should discuss how many cs she should limit herself to with her consultant when expecting dc3. It clearly irritated them that I even mentioned it.

The thing is now, they are telling everyone that they want at least 6 kids. I am happy to be told I'm wrong, but I thought up until a few years ago atleast, 3 or 4 cs was pushing it a bit.

Just had my second, asked my consultant who said my uterus was in great nick and good to go again.

Have had 4 and was advised by a strict midwife not to have any more

there's no limit as such but everytime you have a cs your risk of bladder/bowel damage increases, your risk of bleeding/pph increases, and for susequent pregnancies problems with the placenta adhering to the scar tissue more tightly than it should is also an increased risk. There's also always the risk of infection and problems with healing that come with having a cs as well.
I think 4 is quite a lot really.

My friend was advised 3 but that was a few years ago not sure if it's changed

MrsCampbellBlack · 22/04/2012 18:34

Depends very much on the state of your uterus and scar tissue. I had my 3rd a couple of years ago and the surgeon admired my neat uterine scar Blush Wink and said I'd be fine to have another if I wished.

Thanks for the quick replies. My understanding is that when she had her last she was told everything was looking good in there.

I also reckon if you keep getting pregnant, there is nothing the doctors can do other than keep giving you a cs.

My real concern, tbh is that her partner is the one pushing for lots of kids. She is very young and a bit pushed around I think.

I think it's a very individual thing, what risks are run, depends on previous experience, too. Friend had 5 CS & would have had 6 if she fell pg again.

Rose Kennedy is famous for having 9 or 11 CS, back when it was a well dodgy, too.

Blimey! That's loads! Just shows what your body can be capable of. Maybe I'm just worrying over nothing then.

I have had 2. Surgeon advised us to think carefully about having more as my uterus is very, very thin and if we did to leave it at least a year and not to attempt a vbac. I think it depends on the condition of your bits!

Pumpster · 23/04/2012 22:16

I've had 4 and surgeon said a fifth was fine for me, not that I am going to as dp has now had the snip.
Depends on the person and the state of the womb I think!

I have been wondering about this too. I had my 1st by Emergency csection and 2nd had a failed vbac. At the time no one advised me of a limit. Sometimes I wish they had as I may have not so readily agreed to 2nd section had I known. Now I am pregnant with third and will be having a csection. Will definately stop at 3 as I think risks are too high.
