How long is too long without breathing at birth. How many minutes, roughly, before baby suffers brain damage?

Gosh - that is bit heavy!! Is everything ok bfcmdr??? I think that it can totally depend - My friend's DS didn't breath for five mins after birth because of a blocked tube. He is fine, a little delayed, but he is gorgeous and they are sure that he will lead a perfectly normal life once he has matured a little physically. He is 3 now.

I wondered if these people could help?

BLISS

I did try a search for you and found nothing, these people specialise in babies needing special care and should be able to help.

he didnt breathe because he couldnt. He has a cleft palette and was was lay on his back so his tongue flopped back and was restricting his airway for 8 mins. He cannot be layed on his back and has to be nursed, carried, fed, changed everything on his side.No on seems to be concerned, but i am sure they must be about the 8 mins, but me and other BF are very worried., but he is a beautiful little fella and we will be there for her and him always.

I do know that if you are going to not breathe, then birth is the time to do it- our Psychology lecturer tells of all sorts of brain traumas that infants have endured with no bad effects, the older you are the worse it is- brain plasticity, etc. So hopefully the news will be really good.

Must be scary for her with the cleft palette though.
