What should I do?

I am 39+5 today, woken up with waves of abdominal/back cramps for about an hour. Went to toilet - had a show. Had another wave of cramps which felt like a very painful period (but still bearable iyswim) Thing is, do I send DH to work or keep him home? His work is an hour away. Could it just be false labour or does it sound like the real thing?

go back to sleep if you can
is this your 1st?

Blondeinlondon · 10/02/2006 08:22

do you want him at home?

harpsichordcarrier · 10/02/2006 08:27

I think it is porbably early labour from the sounds of it but really there is no telling how long the stages might last.
do you want him with you?
where are you planning to have the baby?
established labour isn't until you have regular contractions - are they regular?

Chloe55 · 10/02/2006 08:29

It is my first, have been crampy on and off for about 2 weeks but these are more painful. DH is worried it might be false labour (as am I ) and that he takes today off work meaning he has used a day of paternity. I do want him with me if it is the real thing. I know it could be hours/days before anything kicks off but don't want to be here on my own if it does - should I call the midwife?

I have had 5 bouts since 6.30am but not regular

yes, call the midwife.
good idea.
if it's your first it's not LIKELY to be quick but every labour is different of course and you might have slept through the first part of it.... if you're lucky.
how do you feel about him going? if the pain is bearable then are you OK on your own?

Chloe55 · 10/02/2006 08:35

Will give her a call then. Pain is bearable but I'm a wimp and don't want to be on my own

Thanks for your help, will no doubt check back in later when I find out it is a false alarm!

It sounds like early labour (GOOD LUCK!) but I would send him to work if he has a mobile

And take some paracetamol and go back to bed

I speak from a shitty 27-hour first labour - there is nothing worse than trying to push a baby out when you are exhausted!

Good luck

FrannyandZooey · 10/02/2006 08:37

How far away does he work? I got caught like this myself and dp went merrily off to work ("Oh it's your first, it'll be days yet"). I wished he bloody hadn't when he couldn't get home till 3.30pm and I'd been in labour by myself from 6.30am till the midwife came at 2.30

Blondeinlondon · 10/02/2006 08:37

Good luck

Oh and best of luck - it is such an adventure and soon you will have your baby

harpsichordcarrier · 10/02/2006 08:45

Helen38 · 10/02/2006 09:00

Did you rind mw???

How are you????

Frizbetheexpansionset · 10/02/2006 09:05

Oooh Chloe good luck

MrsDoolittle · 10/02/2006 10:14

Oh My God!!
Same story here. I was woken up at 2 am with HUGE contractions, shocked me - I've been niggling for weeks. Rang my mw who said have a cup of tea, time them and see when they become regular. They didn't, I was tried with a cold, got bored waiting and went back to bed. Never phoned her back!
Next thing I know it's 7 am. Spoke to MW at 8am and we agreed he wasn't ready to come yet but I needed to rest to get over my cold.
That was then, I am getting waves of contractions now every 15 minutes since then (here we go agaain) but they aren't excruciating. They seem to start from my centre IYSWIM
