Don't know about a vaginal birth but I had a planned c section with no issues at 10:31 a.m Friday and was sent home the following Saturday evening. Midwife visited me at home the next day, asked questions about me and baby which took about ten minutes. Then a midwife visited every few days, checked scar, weighed baby etc. they never stayed long and I never thought to ask for visits to be reduced or shortened. They're really not that bad to be honest. They only annoying thing is that they don't give you a time when they are coming, only a date which means you're waiting in until they've been. Angry

I had a vaginal birth with no issues, ds was born at 10:52am and I was home by 8:30pm the same day. It could have been earlier, they said I could go as soon as ds was seen by the pead, which he was about 2 hrs after he was born (although I don't think they can discharge you before 6 hours after the birth, but I could be wrong), but then they needed to make sure there were no issues with feeding. The midwife got a bf support lady to come see me, which took a while. I had the option to stay overnight, but as I felt fine I wanted to come home to my own bed and with dp.

I think for the first week or so I had visits from the midwife every few days, and then I got discharged to the health visitor, who came and weighed and measured ds once a week for 2 or 3 weeks. Obviously I cant speak for everyone, but the midwives and HV's I had were lovely, and only ever stayed 10/15 mins.

Where I work its as quick as I can get the paperwork done, I've known people go home after less than 2 hours.

Comm m/w would come and see you at home the day after you leave hospital. If you don't want much input from her and she has no concerns then she's be back on about Day 5 to do heelprick. Then again on day 10 to discharge you.

VivaLeBeaver · 16/04/2012 11:42

Oh and after a c-section minimum is 24 hours but usually 2 days. Will depend from hospital to hospital.

However rememebr its not a prison. Wink

I had my dc years ago when it was policy to stay in for 5 days after a section. Midwives had a fit when I announced on day 2 that I was discharging myself as I felt fine and couldn't cope with all the snorers!

Though obviously if staff have a specific concern regarding you then do listen to them.

thanks all, and this may be a daft question but, if ur not wanting to bf at all, do you take in formula to give the first feed or do they provide something special?

I had my son at 11:04 and was discharged just after 5 I think 6 hours is the standard although as it was a holiday he wasn't seen by the doctor do had to take him back the next day then after that the midwife comes in every 2nd or 3rd day for around 10 days Smile

VivaLeBeaver · 16/04/2012 12:18

Ask your comm m/w about formula - some hospitals provide it, others don't.

I had ELCS with no issues. 2 nights in hospital, then a midwife came every day for 10 days (think we're unusually well-cared for in my area though!). On 11th day out of hospitale the HV arrived and she visited weekly for a while.

The breast-feeding counsellors came on days 1, 2, 4 and 7 after leaving hospital and phoned on days 3 ,5 and 6. After the final community midwife visit (day 10 out of hospital) mums are advised to go to b/f clinics and groups - no more home visits or phone calls.

I had DS on a Friday and was discharged on the Monday - but the midwives said that they'd have sent me home on the Saturday if DS hadn't had to go to neo-natal (he was early).

My hospital didn't provide formula on the post-natal ward, they told mothers that they had to bring their own in. This was apparently because the hospital actively supports breastfeeding.

Vaginal birth no issues here.
Arrival at hospital 6:31
Baby Born 6:47
Departure from hospital 11:30 ish
