Cholestasis and Delayed Induction

Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice? I went in to hospital yesterday to be induced at 38+4 as have got Cholestasis, this is my second pregnancy I had it in my first and was induced at 39+3 as this is when it was detected. I waited at the hospital yesterday for four hours as the midwives didn't think that there was sufficient reason to induce me even though a consultant had advised it and booked me in. After being told 4 or five time they were then they weren't going to do it, another consultant came along and said that it was probably 'alright' to leave me for another week until I was 39+4 but then I ought to be induced. I didn't mind either I was just concerned that the right decision was made for the safety and well being of my baby...... and I am still not confident as to whether this is the case. I got the impression that the midwives to not like induction and so were pushing for me not to have it..... I am so worried that I should have stayed firm and said that I wanted to be induced as was originally planned, if anyone could put my mind at rest I would be grateful, I have read a lot about links with stillbirths and OC and am just so worried now this is not a great end to an otherwise healthy pregnancy. I am also on Urso and Vit K tablets. Thank you!

Hi Twittle,

I had cholestasis in my last pregnancy (diagnosed at 40+3!) and they induced me as soon as they realised - had the midwife knocking on my front door! Luckily I've not developed it so far this pregnancy (25 weeks) but my ALT is rising so they're keeping a close eye.

This time around when i saw the consultant a few weeks ago, she said that they don't have a blanket policy of when to induce but looked at the whole picture of how you and the babe are, and blood tests, but wouldn't let you go over. Maybe that's what your consultant was considering?

Thank you Meebles

I think that probably is the case and that's why they have re-booked me for next Friday when I will be 39+4 it is just a little disconcerting that one consultant said one thing and then as the midwives weren't really very happy another consultant decided on a different plan of care, I suppose it comes down to who knows best medically a midwife or a consultant.... they didn't really seem to be communicating very well and has left me feeling more worried than I was before. My ALT has calmed down since I have been on Urso so I suppose that is a good thing and why they postponed the induction but I would imagine its only stable because of the medication.

Good luck for this pregnancy, hope you don't suffer with OC again! And thank you for replying to my post its really helpful to hear what others think/what experiences they've had!

My understanding is that they recommend induction after 38 weeks, though I am not an expert and have no direct experience - although they think I had OC in all 3 pregnancies, it was only diagnosed in the last one and then DS3 arrived 5 weeks early spontaneously (weighing 8lbs 6oz but that's another story!).

I'd have a look at the website for OC Support (www.ocsupport.org/index.html - I've no idea how to do a link I'm afraid).

It was started by Jenny Chambers, who is a midwife who had OC, and they have the following helpline info on the website:
â– 07939 871929 ? Jenn Deasington
7:00 p.m. ? 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday
â– 07947 939011 ? Magdalen Rees
7:00 p.m. ? 9:00 p.m. Monday, Wednesday; messages may also be left during the daytime Monday?Friday and Magdalen will respond as soon as she is able to.
â– Email: [email protected]

They know about all things OC-related and would know if your midwies are right or not. Hope that helps...

Thank you Ilo thats really helpful I will see if I can get in touch with them, I am going back Tuesday for more bloods and another CTG and am booked in for induction again on Friday but it would be good to know if I should push for it to be done sooner or not! Probably a good job your DS3 arrived 5 weeks early if he already weighed 81bs 6oz unless that was GD?! Thank you again for your advice.

Good luck - I'm sure it will all be fine, but there is often a bit of confusion about OC apparently, and certainly Jenny and her team are the experts!
No, I tested negative for GD - just an enormous baby, and yes, I was grateful he wasn't term...
