Does gas and air make you nauseous?

One midwife said yes the other said no, labour itself makes you nauseous.

Nor me. I was off my face with it (in a good way I want to add!)

Great stuff. Can understand though why people could react differently to it

Merivel · 11/04/2012 00:26

Has made me feel nauseous & very strange when used at dentist's , & I never have problems with sedation or drugs which make some people feel too spaced . It made Dh's nausea from kidney stones much worse when used in ambulance

ElephantsAreMadeOfElements · 11/04/2012 00:27

No. I throw up repeatedly through early labour but once I get to transition and start on the gas and air I am fine (in terms of nausea -- obviously it's still not the most comfortable experience in the world).

solidgoldbrass · 11/04/2012 00:31

I upchucked after the first few puffs but then I got the hang of it and found it rather entertainingly hallucinogenic. The only sort-of-downside was that I sicked up the blood-pressure pill they'd given me, which led to a rather spectacular high BP score of 200/118 just after producing DS; had to reassure them that I'd lost the pill rather than being that high a BP even after it.

akaemmafrost · 11/04/2012 00:37

It made me have panic attacks, I didn't like feeling so out of control on it.

MmeBucket · 11/04/2012 00:39

We don't get that here in America for birth, but I've had it several times for dental procedures, and it doesn't make me nauseous in the least, but I've found that I totally understand tie-dye now, and I saw music whilst under it, and I have uncontrolled giggles, also.

startail · 11/04/2012 00:42

If you've had hospital soup, Yes.
I threw up and resorted to pethidine with DD1.

If you have a home birth and avoid hospital food, it's great.

startail · 11/04/2012 00:44

I found it took the edge off the pain, but certainly didn't make me feel out of it at all, very dull.

MimsyBorogroves · 11/04/2012 00:47

No, but it made me very panicky.

BitterAndTwistedChoreDodger · 11/04/2012 00:55

I was sick on it, but only because it made my mouth really dry, and I suspect I was already dehydrated.

Didn't stop me puffing on it, it definitely took the edge off a 36 hr labour. Grin

AgnesBligg · 11/04/2012 01:04

I didn't do so much for me I have to say. I sucked away merrily for the first part of labour, but had to just gasp at thin air in 'established' labour as it made me light headed and quite drunk feeling. Horrid.

If I were to have another childbirth (I won't) I would be asking for Monsieur Epidural all the way thank you.

FaneFeyre · 11/04/2012 01:08

Labour made me feel sick and gas and air made me worse. Horrible horrible, I knew I would hate it and I did!

DaenerysTargaryen · 11/04/2012 01:09

Youwont know until you try it, it makes me feel so sick I can't use it. Others love it.

KatOD · 11/04/2012 05:27

Made me sick but that didn't stop me using it, certainly helped get through a very long and traumatic labour and a lot of subsequent stitches. My husband said I was playing it like a kazoo at one point.

Definitely a personal thing, you won't know how you'll react until you try it. Good luck!

RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 11/04/2012 05:42

It didnt really make me nauseus so much as lightheaded (mind you, I had been given an anti-nausea shot by then as had thrown up twice). In any case, it didnt help with the pain and I hated the light headed sensation so I got an epidural, but I know lots of people love it, as this thread shows.

what I would say is that if you've ever smoked hash and didnt like that feeling, it's not dissimilar.

flagnogbagnog · 11/04/2012 05:50

Didn't make me sick and was brilliant for concentrating on through the huge contractions. The first few puffs make you feel high but that feeling soon went for me. As for actually relieving pain? I'm not sure how effective it is at all, but brilliant as a exercise in controlling your breathing and stopping you panicking.

Lunarlyte · 11/04/2012 09:25

It didn't make me nauseous but I did trip my tits off after a few hours of having it! Thought I saw an old-fashioned, early 20thC midwife at the foot of the bed. Not scary, just odd. Oh, and I think it made me lose track of time, too - great for a long labour!

It took the edge off contractions but I didn't find it effective enough for the transition phase.

I must have been sucking it in for about 7 hours and had terrible chest-pain on the PN ward. That may have been a combination of oter factors, though (lack of food, sleep, long labour, long time pushing, drop in BP etc).

FrozenNorthPole · 11/04/2012 20:44

Yes. Horrible, ineffective stuff in my case. Really disappointed: I now labour too fast to have an epidural, opiates make me sick and so does gas and air. Biting an unattached mouthpiece it is then!

Springforward · 11/04/2012 21:37

I was offered an anti-emetic but refused it as I didn't need it. Guess it would have helped with nausea if I had, though?

FutureNannyOgg · 11/04/2012 21:51

I projectile vomited, mid contraction, several times between puffs. Horrible, horrible stuff.

I also found using it made my mind too wobbly to manage the breathing and mental focus pain control I had been doing, so actually I was in more pain.

Someone once described it to me as being like drinking 3 glasses of wine, very quickly. I don't really drink, don't like being drunk, so I'm not surprised I didn't get on with it.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 11/04/2012 21:58

Didn't make me feel at all sick and I was high as a kite. Love the stuff - it's definitely on my 'pro' list for having a third Wink.

patchesmcp · 18/04/2012 20:50

Nope, not for me, but it didn't really help very much either, although biting on the mouth piece did!

GwennieF · 18/04/2012 20:52

Not a bit - it's marvellous stuff!
