straw poll for anyone who has had a DC via CS under General Anaesthetic- APGAR related

My DS was born via category 1 EMCS under GA. He was born with an APGAR of either 1 or 2 (hospital records are contradictory!) for his heart rate and 0 for everything else, so he had a total or 1 or 2 APGAR.

Am now pregnant with DC2 and saw a consultant last week, was meant to be a 10 min appt to discuss what happened last time and why and what might happen this time. She hadn't even read my substantial file before the appointment so how the hell they thought this would be enough time is beyond me. One of her throw away comments was that i shouldn't worry about his Apgar as they can't be sure as to whether it was the GA that caused him to be that low, and that it might not have been down to the level of distress he was in and the 4 hours of pushing before they finally stepped in and did the EMCS (my concern is that they expect me to put my trust in them, when in my eyes, they left things for that long last time that there wasn't even time to administer a spinal before doing the CS, and he came out on paper as almost dead bar for the heart beat.

So my question is, if you have had a baby or babies under CS via GA, what APGAR was your child? and were you ever given any explanation as to is there a link between GA and the state the baby will be in? i was under the impression that they pull the baby out almost as soon as you are knocked out so i am a bit sceptical that there would be any time for the GA to even affect the baby??

I can't comment specifically about your case but why did they give you a GA? Was it for fetal reasons? concerns about heart rate etc? or was it because they couldn't give you any decen pain relief - i.e. an epidural that wasn't working properly?

GA is normally done in an emergency and therefore that would suggest there were already concerns about the baby's wellbeing and that would have affected the APGAR scores. that said, having a GA, even fora minute or two, really does affect the baby's wellbeing at delivery

Hope things go better this time

My 36 week dd, born at 4lb 4 was 8 immediately after birth, 9 5 minutes later & 10, 5 minutes after that.

And I should point out that the reason for the section, was her distress after induction.

Daisybell1 · 06/04/2012 09:50

My dd was born by emcs and had an agpar of 7. She freaked out the mw by being fast asleep and unresponsive when she was born. I think that was due to the tranquilisers they gave me - if they could affect a baby to that extent, then I would expect a GA to affect a baby too.

SkinnyVanillaLatte · 06/04/2012 09:55

My first was emcs under GA.I don't recall the actual agpar but it was perfectly normal - not low.
The emcs was because of foetal distress(dipping heart rate)

DD was born five months ago emcs under GA. She was born like that because I had a uterine rupture (due to previous emcs) and her heart stopped whilst I was in labour. APGAR was 2 at 1 min because her heart rate was so slow (she had CPR the moment she was born to get it going again), so she was blue etc. At 5 mins it was pretty normal. DH remembers every second (obviously I was unconscious) and says the whole "You're going to theatre" to being presented the baby was less than 5 mins. In our case the GA did not cause the APGAR result, rather, the APGAR result was because of the condition (heart stopped) that caused the emcs under GA IYSWIM.

Also, consultant was brilliant and talked us through what happened the next day. Apologised for the small cut on DD's back he said "she was a real slash and grab".

SoftSheen · 06/04/2012 10:14

DD was born by CS under GA 13 months ago. Her APGARs were 9 at 1 min and 10 at 5 min, so she was basically fine, despite appearing to be in distress prior to delivery (hence the crash CS). Doctors were great.

coffeelover01 · 13/04/2012 20:37

My baby had an apgar of 2. However, I had the csection because she was distressed. Therefore, I think the csection probably saved her life. I don't think ga caused low apgar.

Lexie1970 · 14/04/2012 22:41

I had DS by crash section under GA. I had been induced, progresses to 6cm quickly and then it all went per-shaped when I started bleeding and he went into distress... His apgar was 4 at birth requiring resuscitation and was then 9.

He has just turned 5 and nothing wrong at all :)

emsyj · 15/04/2012 20:52

DD was born nearly 2 years ago by crash CS under GA - as with SoftSheen she was distressed (possibly due to a fast labour after waters breaking first) and had the same result - slightly lower at birth then fine after 5 mins (can't remember exact numbers at birth).

Madsometimes · 15/04/2012 21:06

My dd1 was born by a vaginal delivery with only gas and air, no complications with the cord or placenta, but had an agpar score of 4. The only unusual thing about my labour was that it was quick (2.5 hours), and at 38 weeks gestation. She was resusitated by the midwife and has not suffered any long term problems relating to her birth.

I know it is worrying for you, especially after your traumatic first delivery. How old is your ds now, and is he healthy?
