Had my VBAC appointment with the consultant today - happy!

I am 36 + 5. My last labour was not great - 3 day labour, in which time I only got to 7 cm, with a syntocin drip (which did nothing) and epidural a few hours from the end. Ended up in EMCS due to my failure to progress and foetal distress. Turned out that he was back to back, with his chin well up, and the cord was wrapped round his neck and legs, and he was never coming out vaginally under any circumstances.

I had a standard VBAC appointment today. I agreed to try a VBAC on the following basis

  • I won't have to have a sweep.
  • If I don't go into spontaneous labour at 40 + 10, I will not be induced and will go straight for ELCS.
  • If I go into spontaneous labour, the following will happen: ** I will not have to have continuous foetal monitoring in the sense that it will be non-stop. It will be intermittent until I reach about 7-8 cm. I will be allowed to be pretty mobile and get up and squat and whatever. **My labour won't be accelerated with syntocin. If I am not making progress, I will have an EMCS.

Does that sound reasonable? I think I am happy with this. My fear has always been (and I know that all labours are different, and there is no crystal ball) that I will be in labour for what feels like forever again, and then end up with an EMCS at he end, just like with DS. And I was exhausted, had difficulty BFing, and felt very much like we were starting off on the back foot and didn't recover from it.

If you're happy, then it sounds reasonable.

I had my VBAC appointment last week, having decided i wanted a repeat section, but the consultant was clearly gently steering me down the VBAC route. I agreed to see if I went into labour naturally but refused induction point blank (and he seemed pretty supportive on this point). He then asked how long I would wait for spontaneous labour to start and I said (a little cheekily), 'until my due date'. He just smiled and agreed. So unless I go into labour early, I will have my section on my due date.

This is the right choice for me and that's all that matters in my opinion.

By the way, I was told I would need continuous monitoring, but that didn't mean it had to render me immobile on the bed. He put it in such a way that I couldn't disagree (i.e. it's for the baby's sake). So good for you that they've agreed to intermittent monitoring.

Sounds exactly like my VBAC appointment result-i's such a relief isn't it to know where you stand. It all sounds very sensible and reasonable to me.

I ended up with the ELCS in the end but as I had a 13lb boy i was very pleased it went that way. he's 11 weeks old and i'm fully recovered.#

Good luck
