Hi

Just writting down some prefrences for labour.

Does any one have suggestions regarding the chord? Either delaying cutting of the chord or chord blood donation?

My DH does not want to cut the chord.

TIA

Never thought about it tbh, does your hospital do cord donation?
My dh didn't cut the cord either.
I've heard that alot of mums chose to leave the cord attached until it stops pulsating. I don't know if hospitals have there own rules regarding this as it can often take a while

JustOneMoreQuestion · 29/03/2012 22:01

I had a natural third stage so that the cutting of the cord could be delayed, as I had read up on the benefits to the baby. (easily googled)
I intended to have a natural third stage in each of my 3 labours, but was talked out of it by mw who didn't want to have to oversee it. I was given a medical journal by one mw detailing all the things that could go wrong if I didn't have the injection to expel the placenta quickly (meaning the cord had to be cut immediately) but I thought of all the ladies who have given birth through the ages, and unexpectedly and din't suffer for it.
I was more confident by my third pregnancy and insisted on it, and I'm so pleased I did.

If you are interested in cord blood donation or storage you'll need to look into whether it's an option at your hospital. It's still quite unusual.

I planned a natural third stage with DD2. I had delayed cord cutting, but the placenta was so stubborn I ended up having the injection (45 minutes later). The benefit is basically more blood into the baby, which is especially beneficial for iron levels.

The Hospital does participate in cord blood donation. That was where I saw the posters.

Hi, I'm new to Mumsnet and had a similar question. We'd like to store the cord blood / tissue as QTPie mentioned but I'd also like delayed clamping. Not enough blood to do both really although the company we chose did say we can pulse for a couple of minutes and then hopefully still have enough to take a sample. Would love any advice! Thanks, T

Does your hospital participate in this type of process- many in the UK don't?

StarlightDicKenzie · 01/04/2012 23:11

Laaaaaa, laaaaaaaa, laaaaaaa!

TaliaL · 02/04/2012 07:22

You'llLaughAboutItOneDay - yes, the hospital does allow it although we'd have to pay for a phlebotomist. I almost wish I hadn't heard about it! Part of me thinks it's an expensive headache (think most people would tell me I'm wasting my money) but then a friend of mine had a scare with her DD1 which put the wind up me. We didn't do it for DS either. I was just wondering if anyone had done it and/or delayed clamping as both seem rare still

We delayed cutting with DD (2nd birth), but wasn't aware of it for DS (1st birth). Seems like a pretty good idea whwen you read about it. The midwife cut both as my DP was too scared.
