What were you doing when your waters broke?

I'm 39 weeks pregnant with second dc. First time round I has slow leaking of waters for several days before I really clocked what it was and by then I was in labour. I had bad spd last time so didn't venture out too much in the last few weeks.

This time round no spd Smile so out and about being active with 2 yr old. Yesterday I started to get a bit paranoid about my waters going if I was out shopping or at soft play or something. Has this happened to anyone and how did you/others react??!

Nothing - they never did - ended up with an EMCS so I suppose they puncture you or something Grin - never really thought about it.

EMS23 · 29/03/2012 11:02

37+6 as I walked into the house after having collected a large wooden gate from the garden centre and lifting it into the car. DD arrived exactly 24 hours later.

Charleymouse · 29/03/2012 11:02

Determined, snap! This is meant to be lucky isn't it being born with intact waters.

NoVeggiesBeforeSkeggies · 29/03/2012 11:05

With DD mine went as I was walking to the Chinese takeaway.
I carried on anyway, thinking "bugger this I'm having my dinner first"

With DS they went just in hospital, before he was born.

allhailtheaubergine · 29/03/2012 11:06

I was Mumsnetting.

Of course.

moojie · 29/03/2012 11:19

So most people have been okay and they have gone at home. Just back from midwife and she said that they are very unlikely to go when out and about and that most people's go either on the toilet, first thing in the morning or later on in labour which pretty much fits what you have all described!

Loving the Chinese and curry food connections though. Hmmm takeaways for the rest of the week then!

allhailtheaubergine seeing as I seemed to be obsessed as my husband puts it to mumsnet I can totally see that happening too! I think I might start moaning about my pregnancy and toddler woes to DH and I think he'll soon back off about me mumsnetting all the time !!!

DD- sitting on the sofa eating rice

DS- asleep in bed

Both totally out of the blue.

ShowOfHands · 29/03/2012 11:28

Both late at night too. Most of my friends who've had spontaneous, unexpected membranes rupture have had it happen at night.

My Mum works in a department store and a lady's waters broke in soft furnishings last week. She phoned ME for advice.

CherryBlossom27 · 29/03/2012 11:56

Mine broke as DS head was going out...ouchies!

ItsOkItsJustMyBreath · 01/04/2012 09:59

Thought I was wetting the bed and tried to run to the loo whilst they were splashing around my ankles, good god, I never knew there would be so much! DS born 10 hours after.

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 01/04/2012 10:06

DD - I was bending down putting some towels in a drawer when they went with a pop and I waddled to the bath with one of the clean towels clutched to my groin, thinking 'Oh Fuck my phone is downstairs' and DH was not at home

DS - just as I climbed onto the table in theatre for an EMCS, they went all over my freshly washed slippers.

Clean washing theme here I think Grin

BikeRunSki · 01/04/2012 10:15

DS - just getting into bed
DD - scrubbing the floor

pumpkinsweetie · 01/04/2012 10:19

DC1: enduced waters broke with hook
DC2:enduced waters broke with hook
DC3:waters broke accidently on 1st examination by Midwife
DC4:at home at night in bed

dlady · 01/04/2012 10:21

With dd1, I was asleep at 2am, I woke, heard a pop and felt a tiny trickle. I went to the loo and waited for a gush, but it never happened. I continued to trickle for ages and was made to sit on a plastic bag with a towel on the way to hospital. Dd was born 8hrs later.
With dd2, she was 11 days late, I went into hospital to be induced, my waters were broken and she was born 2hrs 20mins later, with a scratch on her head from the crochet hook thing (sounds awful, but I felt nothing when my waters were broken).

ProlificYoungGentlemenBreeder · 01/04/2012 10:23

Mine broke with DS2 whilst I was pushing.
With DS1 they were broken for me.

BikeRunSki · 01/04/2012 10:29

Moojie, with DD I had only been in for 5 mins. I am sure she was waiting.

scaryg · 01/04/2012 10:39

4.48am in bed, we'd put the waterproof mattress protector on the night before. When my DP came in I was laid in a pool of water.

notasgreenasiamcabbagelooking · 01/04/2012 10:52

With DS1 while I was going to the loo about an hour after waking up with my first contraction.

With DS2 whilst I was out having lunch with DH, DS1 and a friend. I was tucking into some paella when I felt a pop and they gushed out. We were near my mate's house so she went to get me a long coat and my DH went to pick up the car to swoop me. When I stodd up it was like a waterfall. It was all very embarrassing but the all male staff were very nice about it (some poor bugger will have had to clean up the very large puddle). I haven't been back yet, but my friend has - I'm glad it wasn't one of my regular haunts. DS2 was born about 90 minutes later.

  1. Picture the scene: bright summer's evening, was in a church as part of the audience at DH's choir concert, doors open due to heat, breeze blowing in. Utter silence. DH was doing a viola piece during the first half of the concert to allow his fellow singers a rest and a drink of water. Kid decides the opening bars of this gentle piece are a really good time to attempt to kick his way out. Spectacular cascade. The look on the face of man sitting behind me was priceless and worth the embarrassment.
  2. Got out of bed in the morning, pop, waters went everywhere all over bedroom carpet.
  3. very little water left as was 41+6 and due for induction the following morning. Was having an afternoon nap when I felt a pop. Luckily no water left or bed would have very wet.
  4. Had been up since the wee small hours with mild contractions, like every night for weeks. Went to loo, came back to continue balancing on yoga ball and watch crap TV when waters went everywhere. Grabbed towels from piles of folded laundry fortuitously lying around and spent next 6 hours mopping up.

I think I am unusual in all my labours starting with the waters going though. Many people's seem to stay intact until the end of the first stage.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 01/04/2012 11:03

i was doin' a poo.

ToxicToria · 01/04/2012 11:10

I was really worried about that happening but mine broke at 2am so I was in my bed thankfully as mine was like a water balloon bursting Grin

AceOfBase · 01/04/2012 12:01

With ds I was in a shopping centre after the shops had shut. I thought I had weed my pants (was 32 weeks) and had an argument with an Chinese cleaner who didn't speak English that wouldn't let me go to the toilet. I won that argument :o. I then proceeded to walk to the supermarket to wait for a lift home so i could pack my hospital bag.

With dd I was bent over mopping up vomit from a very upset ds who had a particularly nasty d&v bug and who's poor wee bottom had just exploded. the first thing I thought was oh shit there's another thing to clean up :o

I must wonder where currently cooking dc3 with decide to appear. Hopefully somewhere with people This time :o

PestoPenguin · 01/04/2012 21:50

DC1 I was in the delivery suite... thought I was pushing, but turned out to be a poo I was pushing Blush. There was so little water they didn't believe me at first.

DC2 & 3 I was doing 2nd stage pushing in the pool. DC2 was born about 5 mins later, as her head pretty much descended and crowned instantly after the waters went. DC3 was a little longer.

FutureNannyOgg · 01/04/2012 22:23

I was bouncing on a birth ball, then DH fell off the bed and I laughed so hard my waters went. I had been having regular contractions for a good while by then.
