Had 2nd degree both times, both times because I panicked and pushed when I should have listened and done the breathe-it-out thing! I just didn't like having a head halfway out of me, I guess! No worse second time.

HTH

Second degree both times, second time slightly worse but stitched up better. I also fire them out like greased pigs... :o

Dozeyland · 25/03/2012 21:32

lol greased pigs!

My DD1 came out 8lb9 unexpectedly and within less than 20mins of pushing. I did the "breathe-it-out thing" well according to MW but it was the weight/speed of labour and that I had "bulging waters" until her head came out is why i got a 2nd degree.

I didnt realise i did tear, MW said "that would have been the perfectbrith but you have a little tear" I said, No i'm fine! I dont need anything! ans she insisted. I never had any problems with it though, could wee within hours, and passed bowels the next day.... it was only when the stitches had dissolved that i knew the scar was there.. in regards to sex after birth etc... hence why i waited 10 weeks ish!

I just dont like the thought of them eeeew... and especially where I know I've had it once, its more than likely to happen again! eek

Smaller tear second time, just few stitches. Second baby bigger at 9.5lbs so was surprised to have only small tear. Big age gap so perhaps that made a difference, everything had plenty of time to heal!

thisisyesterday · 25/03/2012 21:35

i had a second degree tear first time round
with my second and third children i barely had a graze each time even though they were both bigger

PestoPenguin · 25/03/2012 21:39

DC1 extensive 2nd degree tearing & episiotomy (the repair took over 45mins, too many stitches to count)

DC2 v minor 1st degree tear, no stitches

DC3 No tearing

DC1 forceps, DC2 & 3 waterbirth

DC3 was a pound larger than the others and all were above average.

2 * second degree first time - 7'12 baby fired out like a whippet from a gate.
no tear second time - 8'13 baby gently breathed out (ok, the midwife yelled at me to stoppppppP!)
third time - 7'6 slight graze (baby was hand to head like superman which often results in tearing) but again went easy on the last push.

position and speed of delivery important. all three were at home.

Dozeyland · 25/03/2012 22:04

Will it make a difference considering I only had DD 17 months ago?

Having a tear in one birth makes you no more or less likely to tear in subsequent births than anyone else.

If you do tear though, it's probably going to be as bad or worse (but not guaranteed to be!)

PestoPenguin · 25/03/2012 22:07

I doubt it. If your age gap was 12 months or less maybe, but you've had plenty of time to heal. One MW told me that 2 year age gaps lead to smoother births, as everything is still a bit stretched in there from the last one, though I'm not sure how evidence based that is!

My age gaps were both 2 and a quarter years.

StarlightDicKenzie · 25/03/2012 22:09

2nd degree tears with each of mine but tbh it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Tillyscoutsmum · 25/03/2012 22:10

2nd degree with first. An "extended" 2nd degree with the second. He was 10lb 5ozs though and I had a 6 minute second stage Shock. Stitching up was much better second time as well

SkipTheLightFanjango · 25/03/2012 22:13

Small 2nd deg tear first birth (small baby) loads of stitches 2nd birth (twins..one breech) no tear 3rd..big baby. Guess they really do start to slide out Grin. Midwife did say that I probably would not have had any tear on 2nd birth but for the breech one so you may be fine!

Wolfiefan · 25/03/2012 22:17

Tore during first birth. Tore less during second and seemed to heal faster! (Poor fanjo!) I am completely unable to breathe the buggers out and both times pushed for all I was worth!
In case you need it tea tree or lavender in bath. Rinse stitches and dab with kitchen towel (my mum recommended hair dryer!) and lots of pelvic floor exercises all help!

Ok do a bad two way 2nd degree with dd, another one who has them quick and fast. Ds was a 2nd degree but only one split and was nearly born in his waters.

RiskItForABiscuit · 26/03/2012 12:00

Dd1; had 2nd degree tear. I gave birth on my back that time.
DD2; 1st degree, gave birth on knees and baby was 1lb bigger.

Youremindmeofthebabe · 04/04/2012 08:55

2nd degree both times. First time he did the damage with his head, 6lb15. I wasn't told to pant during this one. Second labour he did the damage with his shoulders, but came out in a much more controlled way, 8lb2.

Madasaspoon · 04/04/2012 22:54

First time, great big cut that hurt for months.
Second time - a tiny graze, no stitches.

There are things you can do to reduce the chance of tearing or tearing badly. :)
